I was watching a recap on ESPN yesterday and they showed a scene of people watching the game in grant park. They made it look like millions were there. I am down here and didn't even know they were doing a public showing.

 That isn't Baffoe, leash.

His most recent column is about rooting for Ghana because apparently Baffoe is a pretty common last name over there. It was very readable.

This was supposed to go in the douchebag of the week forum.

Tim Baffoe ‏@TimBaffoe

What does posting a pic of the crowd at the Kings parade vs. that of the Blackhawks one do for you? That need for validation is sad.

I love his bio...

Tim Baffoe attended the University of Iowa before earning his degree from Governors State University

Is Iowa a great school and I missed it?

"I went to a mediocre school surrounded by corn fields for two semesters" But I finished. Eventually. At Governor's State.

Does he not know that hockey fans snipe each other over their fanbases like every goddamn day of the year? Baffoe's gonna have to lighten the fuck up here. However, I will note that there's something funny and sad about how this has become Los Angeles/Chicago fans accusing each other of having bandwagon fans. In the land of the blind...

Some years ago a person told me her plans to take a semester to study abroad. Her excitement was obvious. Part nervous curiosity, part “Holy hell, I’m going to get out of the mundaneness of the South Side for five months.”

But I wasn’t happy for her. I hijacked the conversation and made it about the stupidity of studying abroad. How it’s just an excuse for idiot college kids to be debaucherous in a different place since the shine of their college town had faded on the hummingbird 18-21 year old mind. How it’s more about the prestige of saying you studied abroad than about actually learning anything of value and actually appreciating a different culture beyond their different alcohols and sexy accents. How it’s vacation and bragging rights disguised as education.

I took someone’s deserved excitement and undeservedly dumped all over it. Immediately. Drop of a hat. No half-hearted “Oh, that’ll be fun” and then later “but you know…” Instant rejection of her happiness.

Eventually I realized what a tool I was, but you can’t unring a bell like that. And I didn’t realize it as I was unloading on this person’s joy that I was justifying why I wasn’t going to that foreign country, why I was the lame know-it-all-from-my-bubble. Why I wouldn’t be in those museums and plazas and drinking those drinks and eating that food and following those sexy accents to the next club. I was jealous, but not self-aware. And in that subconscious jealousy I just had to, as Herb Lawrence would say, blow out somebody else’s candles to make mine brighter. That was probably not the last time I put someone’s earned happiness down to make myself feel better, but I’ve tried to be more conscious of it since.

I was conscious of it Tuesday morning when I saw something bleed into my internet. As I type this over 1,400 people have retweeted a side by side comparison done by @CluelessChiFan of an overhead shot of the Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup victory parade vs. that of the Chicago Blackhawks of last year. That Twitter account is a parody of the lowest form of fan and does not tweet in earnest (at least it appears so—going through the rest of the page and profile, nobody can be that stupid and manage to mash a keyboard successfully), which is fine. The problem is that most people don’t get the joke (because noticing blatant spelling errors in a profile is hard), that being parades are superfluous and mean absolutely nothing regarding the actual victory or the merits of the team or fans.

That didn’t stop Chicago’s local Fox station from using the tweet for its Facebook page (and nothing attracts intelligence like a local news station’s Facebook page) with the caption “SORRY, LA: We may not have won the Stanley Cup this year... but it looks like a Blackhawks championship parade beats a Kings championship parade any day.”

You know that thousand-legger bug that scurries across your basement floor and often disappears before you have a chance to kill it with a shoe or tissue and leaves you uncomfortable in your bed as you worry about it returning to make a home in one of your body cavities and lay eggs? That Facebook post is the bug. The comments underneath it are the eggs hatched (don’t go and read them—don’t ever read the comments).

And the virus spreads. Sharing, retweeting, favoriting en masse. LOOK AT THIS PICTURE THAT JUSTIFIES MY ROOTING INTEREST IN A TEAM LOOK AT IT NOW I FEEL BETTER ABOUT ME. All the while ignoring that your team didn’t win. That those fans celebrating at the 2014 parade get to do so because their team won, and that bothers you on a level beyond healthy psychology. That you need to gasp for farty bubbles of superficial reassurance as you drown in your own sea of fragile ego. THEY HAVE LESS FANS. THEY’RE FANS ARE UGLY. WE GOT MORE PEOPLE TAKING OFF WORK. THERE FANS ARE GAY. WE GOT MORE TEENS DRINKING IN PUBLIC. WE CELEBRATE THE WRITE WAY. SPORTS TOWN. WHY AM I LAUGHING AND CRYING AT THE SAME TIME WHAT’S HAPPENING I’M SCARED.

“But it’s fun.” No, it’s pathetic. It’s being small masking as fun. That isn’t earned happiness. You’ve gone from entertainment to pathology. You’ve bought in to the Fifth Feather/Twelfth Man/Best Fans in the Game illogicals. You’re the worst sports fan commercial ever.

It’s forwarding along the Lebron vs. hockey players awfulness (what Barry Petchesky refers to as “Defensive Hockey Fan Syndrome,” but it manifests in other stupidity like Calvin peeing on a Packers logo or the need to compare and take pot shots at the Cubs or White Sox while disregarding the two have almost no effect on one another and play in different leagues). Strange that I didn't see any similar memes when US soccer players were injured the other day, though.

And you don’t even understand the inferiority complex you’re screaming out when you do it. Ditto the lack of self-awareness.

You taut unwritten rules and intangibles and think that Kirk Gibson enthusiastically fistpounding his pitcher for plunking Ryan Braun (and screw you for making me think less of someone than Ryan damn Braun) is just awesome. And the very next batter hit a grand slam to put his team up by three. Let’s compare those two victory parades.

Smack talk is fine. In can be really fun when it’s smart and creative (sports memes are neither). See how the Twitter accounts of credible blogs and even the teams themselves actually do smack talk and sports humor. Share their work instead of the basest, easiest tripe of fecal fandom.

Understand the difference between fun and counterproductive. Strive to be a better fan.

As far as diversions go, there is no difference. Strive to stick a red-hot poker up your ass.

Tim Baffoe is the least self-aware nerd on the Score. His entire existence is nothing but one big attempt at validation. He has never typed a thought that wasn't already Bernstein's. Eat a dick, you ugly motherfucker.

 He gets under my skin.

You could just read his bio and hate him.

"I'm a high school English teacher who also tends bar and delivers pizzas and writes for a sports radio station. I'm SUCH a free spirit." PUKE. Stop trying so hard.

Go fucking figure that a column about how Blackhawks fans should be Blackhawks fans on someone else's terms invokes noted fox in the henhouse Barry Petchesky. I mean, it couldn't not. And also, while we're in the neighborhood, shame on you for the LeBron thing. Shame, shame, shame.
