So I bought a new Dryer at Sears Home Appliance in McHenry on Saturday.
Floor model, scratch and dent, but supposedly checked out and all good. Retails for about $1500, but as a floor model/scratch and dent I got it for just over $600.
Got it home, installed it, and everything but the gas valve worked. Naturally, this is a problem as you really should have heat to dry your clothes. So, following protocol, I called service, and they had a guy available today. Nice, today is my off day!
So he diagnoses a bad motherboard. Not sending 24v to the gas valve.
Shit.
Brought it back today, but they didn't have a like model.
They offered to get me a comparable model and eat the cost difference. I settled on a similar Kenmore. But it was $811.00.
They comped the difference.

Nice reaction to a bad situation. Needless to say I was quite pleased. It was a pain installing one and having to bring it back and install a new one but for the difference in price and features not bad, not bad at all.

I would recommend them if you need to buy a new appliance!

I'll second that. We have bought all of our appliances from the Sears Outlet store in Naperville on rt 59, & they have been great. We bought a $3000 refrigerator for $1200 because it had a dent on the side. Great service.

Yes, for me. DW was pretty excited. She killed the shit out of the last dryer I bought. Course it gave us nearly 10 years and I think I spent under $400 on it. This one is pretty sweet. I took it apart already to see how easy it would be to repair and it's much, much nicer than the last one. Nice idle pulley instead of the shitty plastic/felt balancer that the last one had. So it's going to be easier to maintain. I guess it was kind of exciting.

i would actually go crazy to get my own washer dryer. i would love it. same thing with a badass oven or fridge. whenever i become a homeowner i hope to have enough saved up so i can wreck home depot like a kid in a candy store.

Fuck that, go get a scratch and dent. Shit I'll help you get it in my truck for 1/2 the cost of delivery/install and you'll save $1000 overall. Who give a fuck if a washer/dryer is dented? I can't believe that shit gets discounted like it does.

I bought a Charbroil charcoal grill and I couldn't be less happy. I should have just bought the damn Weber. I'll be getting a Weber 22in. Kettle as soon as I have some time.

No. Buying a new roof is the least exciting & least rewarding. Spent $12K for a new one 3 years ago. You cant enjoy a new roof.

I've got a Trane XL90 from 1992 with a large PVC vent sticking out the side of the house. Is there no vent with the high efficiency unit? Why would I want a standard rather than a high efficiency unit?
My house has one furnace & A/C unit...but it should have been built with 2, one for each floor, each with its own thermostat.

2 story, 3500 square feet, with another 1700 in the finished basement. I was quoted about $10K on a new Trane high efficiency. I have a manually adjustable summer/winter baffle in the duct system, & I was told that because of this, I could install a unit which will act like 2 units with a thermostat on each floor, by independently heating/cooling the first & second floors. What do you think?

No, stick with the 90%. I was assuming (incorrectly) that a 22 year old unit was most likely a standard. Sorry. But it's the most common.

Is it 120,000 or 150,000 BTU? Big.

Yeah, maybe a two stage and get two stats with a zone board and do the basement and 1st fl on one zone and the 2nd floor on another zone. You'd trade out the manual damper for an automatic one. It's not cheap but zoning will be nice. We'll need to put in a barometric bypass so you don't get a lot of damper noise (whistling) when one is open and one is closed.

It's do-able. Setting up for two units when the ductwork is designed for one is generally cost prohibitive.

There used to be a Sears Outlet in Schaumburg on Golf and Meacham, but it wasn't open for very long. About three or four years ago I bought a new washer and dryer (the ones that were there when I bought my place sucked, and I swear there was a little guy in a scuba suit living in my washer who would tie the arms of my shirts and the legs of my pants into knots) and went there hoping to find a good deal as I had heard people had good luck at their other stores. You probably have to hit them at the right time, and when I happened to be looking they didn't have a good selection. I don't think that store was open for much more than a year.

I wound up getting LGs from ABT and have been very happy with them. I can wash and dry one load in about the same time it took to just wash or dry one load in the old machines.

Soon. 8 consecutive quarters of $100 million+ losses. $400 million down the shitter in the most recent quarter.

They are picking up the pace of selling off assets and closing stores. Sears also owns K-Mart, which is similarly fucked.

Sears did try to move to an online/same day or quick delivery model, using its shuttered stores as mini-warehouses. But the store real estate tends to be too valuable for retail to use as warehouse space.

So now it's sell off the parts and use the cash from those sales to stay afloat; with the dim hope that somehow a moribund pair of brands--K-Mart and Sears--will catch internet lightning in a bottle and become profitable as online businesses.
