WEATHER ALERT Please be aware that a violent storm front moving across the Plains is picking up speed and could form a derecho -- a line of destructive winds -- by the time it hits the Chicago area late this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. Please take care to secure your construction sites as soon as possible. Derecho is just a bow of a storm system. There was going back a decade or so that plowed across the westerns suburbs, arlington heights, mount prospect, des plaines, schaumburg, etc. I'll never forget driving home and literally all electricity was out for a 20 mile stretch of northwest highway/14. |

"The word was first used in the American Meteorological Journal in 1888 by Gustavus Detlef Hinrichs in a paper describing the phenomenon and based on a significant derecho event that crossed Iowa on 31 July 1877.[2]" So its about 137 year old word. And it comes from a storm in Iowa, which I guess explains a lot. |
