So as I was walking over to the store tonight I decided "hey let's see what Laurence is up to" and low and behold I'm listening to CBS sports radio out of washington DC doing fantasy football. Hey I called up and got my question on the air in under 2 minutes and got a nice answer re-affirming my choices in a must win game, so I'm all good. But after the DePaul game ends I'm yanked out of Ferrall (who i might go back to here in a second) and I'm kicked over to Larry doing DePaul buckets postgame.

As the broadcast finishes up with a much-needed word from coach Oliver Purnell (after another surely-heartbreaking 8pt loss in which it sounds like they never really had a chance) Laurence is doing the final propers when he adds in "The airtime for the preceding game broadcast was purchased by DePaul University"

I damn near fell off of my chair laughing.... don't radio stations usually pay college/sports teams to carry their games because they bring in a bunch of ratings and consequently ad revenue? I mean the cubs going over to WBBM from their ~75yr perch on WGN is a big deal, right? I doubt that Notre Dame has to pay people to put their stuff on air.... so yeah, DePaul University, good luck with that downtown stadium and whatnot hopefully the pope has some people in chicago who have some sway with rahm otherwise, shit, you gotta buy airtime to get your games on the air? HA!

I think the Blackhawks used to do something similar. They were actually paying the Score at one point to air games?

There are some pro teams that pay for their radio time and then sell their own advertising, but I can't remember which. The difference between them and DePaul, of course, is that other teams bill enough to make it a worthwhile proposition whereas it's hard to believe DePaul is doing this for any other reason but to have some minimal media presence.

The Hawks used to buy their time, yes, doing so on WMAQ and then staying put when 670 became WSCR. I think their deal with WGN is some kind of profit-sharing arrangement.

when the revenue isnt going to warrant a purchase price teams buy their own air time.

Yes, the Hawks did it while they were on WSCR...and the Sox have looked at it very serious.

If you remember ESPN didnt even make an offer to retain the White Sox, leaving one station , WSCR to bid on them. The Sox renewal was not sent out for bid either, it was offered to WSCR to make an offer and they cut a deal.

NIU and U of I hoops does it as well.

I knew NIU did, wasn't sure about U of I, but I guess why else would the Score pick them back up unless they were paying more for the airtime than Northern was?

Also, they're not allowed to stream DePaul games? That's odd. Even the NHL lets stations stream games.

Listened to a bit of the new Nerd Herd last night. How this new guy is a "fantasy expert" I have no idea.

Even Larry doesn't deserve this shit.

Nobody in the Great Lakes region noticed that DePaul's men's basketball team beat Stanford's men's basketball team down over the weekend. The Cardinal must have lacked motivation.
