His rant on Judge elections is beyond great. Or he has some great writers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poL7l-Uk3I8 |

This was a really good segment. It wasn't his funniest, but it was illuminating. The other problem I had was that he admits that appointing judges can be just as perilous and that direct election was a good piece of populist reform. Okay, so what do we do? And yeah, until Mad Men's victory lap starts up in a few more weeks, it's the best show on TV. |

Indiana has a pretty good system in place for the appellate and supreme court levels. I don't know all the ins and outs of it, but essentially a non-partisan group, the "Commission on Judicial Qualifications", digs through the applications and nominates three of them to the governor. The governor chooses among those three. They don't use this for local courts though; those are still elected. From http://judgepedia.org/Judicial_selection_in_Indiana#Commission_on_Judicial_Qualifications: Quote: The commission consists of seven members:
the chief justice of the supreme court (who serves as chair); one lawyer from each of the three court of appeals districts (appointed by bar members of that district); and one non-lawyer from each of the three court of appeals districts (appointed by the governor). Commission members serve three-year terms and can not be re-appointed or re-elected. |

There are several different ways to fill the position but all of them are filled with problems. |

Elected sheriffs are probably something we could do without. |

There are several different ways to fill the position but all of them are filled with problems. To me it is quite easy: Appointed judges are far more competent than elected ones. It is much more difficult to be appointed as a judge. Of course, like everything, there will always be exceptions, but Circuit Court Judges are more akin to Precinct Captains. appointed is the same if not worse |
