Last night my team successfully completed its season long quest to reclaim the league cup in honor of our teammate and brother who passed away in November. The league had gotten tougher than ever and we finished in second. In the double elimination playoffs we won our first game vs a bad team 8-6. The next game vs tough competition we trailed 7-5 with 4 minutes left and scored 3 power play goals in 2:30 to advance. In the next round we trailed 3-1 in the 3rd and rallied to win. Last night in the finals we trailed the top seed 2-0 after one period. Rallying again behind the memory of our friend we responded with 9 straight to end the game and reclaim the cup.

Afterwards we brought out our friends jersey and held it up in the team photo.

This team has won 10 championships at Skokie, but none more important or satisfying as last night. Losing and not winning the cup for our friend was simply not an option.

Congrats. My first thought is it is a small team i.e. number of players.

Thanks!

welcome to the world of men's league hockey. Ideally for an over 30 league you would want 10 guys so you could run two lines. If a men's league is a lot younger and faster then 13 is a good number so you can run 3 lines and 2 sets of D. We have 15 on our roster, 1 got hurt, one didn't play enough games to be eligible, and then there's always a few that can't make it that night. Some nights we've had as few as 6, but usually we have around 9-12.

Yeah I played house league early 90's I would have guessed 15 is right and pray for any goalie. congrats again and sorry about your teammate.

I forgot to mention, captain of the other team.....Hunter Hillenmeyer.

Real nice guy, not the best player but considering he is pretty new to the sport he's pretty impressive. Can go north/south really fast, but when it comes to east/west or slowing the game down or using his hands the inexperience takes over. But you can see he's a former pro athlete. After we started piling up the goals he shook his head and was like, damn not much to get upset about, you guys are just really good.

It was their first trip to the championship, not a good matchup for them see us on the other side. Our franchise has been to 11 championship games altogether and we still have never seen an opponent lift a trophy. We're like the Michael Jordan of old man hockey. 8)

His widow was thinking about coming to the game, but she didn't make it. Would've been nice, I was planning to have her come on the ice and accept the trophy. One of the wives was at the game and she was texting her the score throughout the night.

Good stuff shakes. What are you doing to do when you get your day with the Cup?

No check old man hockey. There are still collisions, but Hunter is a big guy so he's probably not too worried about it. But, that said, he is very fast and not good at east west so he could definitley end up getting his bell rung at some point.

As for my day with the Cup, since I'm the captain it will be sitting in my living room till next September. We will bring it to our golf outing this summer and any parties/get togethers we have. Other than that, nothing special, but keep in mind this is our 5th time winning the Cup (its only been around for 6 years) so its old hat to us.

Plus, when I put the Cup down in the locker room it disintegrated into 5 pieces. Not exactly fine craftsmanship. Gonna need to do some duct tape repairs before it goes out on the town.

Awesome, congrats!

Can echo this point. 10 showing up for our games is standard. Skating every other shift as a C is normal with the teams I play with
