As we and I , shit on the guy enough around here, have to give him credit where credit is due.

Getting the Cubs rights on WBBM-CBS is a REALLY strong move at this point. You didnt get them at the end of being good, you got in at a perfect time. I expect Zim to ride this wave for the next 5 years...might carry WBBM and WSCR for years to come.

Yes, but they also lost the Blackhawks to WGN just before the Hawks resurgence. Obviously the Cubs are a bigger get though.

True, but have to give Johnny McDough the credit for that. He knew that a greater demographic exposure would make them a bigger sell. He knows sports fans or coming or not coming, based on winning, but winning and being exposed on Eric and Kathy makes you HUGE money....or WGN

He must be sweating the dropping averages of Bryant, Rizzo, Soler and Russell right now.

Don't knock it until you have tried it. Especially when there are no other options. I listened to, and fully enjoyed, the last few moments of the Hawks big 2010 game 5 overtime win vs Nashville, while sitting in my car in a Home Depot parking lot in the Wisconsin Dells.

It's not a good move until Beardown says it is.

Uh .... for home games that's all there was in this town for forever (and, for a few years, pirated satellite tv to at least get the opposition feed for home games which at the time was nice).

Yes, hockey is just awful on the radio, same with basketball. There's just too much action to describe at once.

Baseball is the easiest to digest, and at least there's a 30-40 second break between plays in football to break down what just happened on the previous play.

yup, no incentive to change the lineup for years. Perhaps just letting Terry retire and doing solo-Bernsy. Saves tons of $, stays lazy and unimaginative, that's good management Zimm.

...and thats the downside...I can only imagine Bernstein daily dropping suggestions off at Mitch and Rods offices of segments he would like to start working on...Bernstein and Bryant, Dan and Tom, Dan's look into the economic impact of the Wrigley Field expansion " A Special Report" of which his son will need to take BP in the new Wrigley for the effect,

Baseball > hockey > football > basketball as far as radio pbp. Death is too good for the people who put NASCAR and golf on the radio.

Didn't the Blackhawks have to pay WSCR to air their games? I imagine the White Sox are approaching a similar fate.

The hawks were paid seven figures by the Score when the station had to assume the contract with the frequency change from 1160 to 670.

Post subject:  Re: Rod Zimmerman

Was that a one-time thing with the Blackhawks brokering the time thereafter? I remember constant references to Blackhawks coverage superseding everything else (2005 Sox unofficial postgame, Doug and OB) because they were buying the time.

My guess would be that Cumulus is either paying a rights fee or doing some kind of profit-sharing agreement (the Blackhawks had or may still have this with WGN), but there's no way He Who Closes Business Deals is resorting to brokered time.

I think it was 2 year deal of the Hawks PAYING to be on the air...thus paid them to leave.

Post subject:  Re: Rod Zimmerman

But they didn't leave, they just went from WMAQ 670 to WSCR 670. They didn't leave until 2008.

And the original deal when the frequency changed was to pay 1.1M a year to the hawks...Thanks Lorna Gladstone

Post subject:  Re: Rod Zimmerman

When was that deal signed? WMAQ signed off in 1999, so the Blackhawks were entering their third year of being completely awful.
