In all seriousness, why did Kenny get the job and why does he get to keep it?

I mean, damn, even Krause was let go.

Winning the World Series is equated to $5,000? Hmmm, bad analogy. Bears fans still talk about Super Bowl 20. What's that worth, $7,500?

I guess you have some private conversations about the 2005 Sox being the best single season team ever in MLB? Such as 46% of ESPN voters had the 85 Bears as the greatest single season in NFL History

So I agree ...bad analogy.

I believe their record in those playoff series is one of the best. I rated the Bears with 50% more money.

I thought I read somewhere that when KW signed with the Sox JR told his parents he would watch out for KW for life. My fading memory cannot pick out the source of that info.

After KW busted out as a player, he was given an executive job with the Sox. He worked his way up as a minor league director until he became THE minor league director. I don't remember the Sox being particularly good at player development even in those days but KW seemed to stick. At the same time, baseball was instituting an initiative for fostering minority executives. JR was chairman of the committee in charge of the initiative. There were others within and without the Sox organization who might have been more qualified when the GM job opened up. However, JR loves KW, JR was chair of that committee and JR was keeping his promise to the Williamses. Boom, steak dinner and KW is the GM

That's how I remember it

Agreed. It is more like that player winning one million.

One million doesn't last for life but it is a big win that justifies all prior spending.

While Schue was the GM they bascially started running it like a committee. Thats when Jerry hired Dennis Gilbertson, special Asst. However, between Shoe, Hemond, Jerry, Pizer and Gilbertson, nobody wanted to be making the calls and the pain in the ass GM work. Thus kenny was named GM to make calls that guys like Hemond and Gilbertson identified.

Nobody knows it more than Kenny. Its why he has such a hard on to win another ring, so he can say he was really the GM and they won it because of him, not ozzie, not the scouts, all because of Kenny.

Fabulous structure

The guy that many people pushed from within the organization was Dan Evans. He'd been a 20 year employee of the Sox and had risen up through their sales dept. to become a baseball executive. I can still hear noted White Sox fan Mike Murphy bemoaning the fact that Evans was passed over for Kenny Williams. Evans later left the organization to become the GM of the Dodgers. Needless to say that he flopped as their GM. It bothered me that Kenny Williams was derided by Murphy and others as being nothing more than a minority hire. The guy did a pretty good job and he was responsible for the only White Sox World Series that I'll probably ever see. He gutted the farm system and I can still remember him saying that they were not going to be "prospects r us" when he took over. I think that was a shot at Schueler actually.

Whether or not he knows what he's doing, was lucky, right place at right time or whatever else, fact is he was the GM of the only WS winner this town has ever had in our lifetimes. I'm sorry but if this were Hendry that did it , we Cub fans would be chipping in to erect his statue no matter how bad the team sucked afterward. Williams gets a lifetime pass IMO .
