"[Lena] Dunham's eye-burning uterus sweater, in this light, served as the perfect visual distillation of her brand of modern "feminist" politics. It's a cult of sorts, reducing women into walking, helpless reproductive systems."

That's pretty good!

After those women have their first Cosmopolitan they are just helpless rape victims in waiting.

zing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

the bait and switch with modern feminism is great.... they think they're having their cake and eating it too (and if you look at a lot of the tumblrettes, man, they're definitely eating some cake) but in reality they're just blaming everything else for their problems and trying to "improve themselves" by cutting down everything else in existence (especially white guys) as opposed to genuinely improving themselves.

one thing that always gets me is the wage gap.... men and women work different jobs (someone get a chart/graph/list of the jobs that are worked by like 90-95%+ men as opposed to 90-95%+ women) and yet women think their jobs should pay them more than other jobs men work for sometimes-better $$$ because uhh.... muh 17%!

basically there oughta be a ~17% vagina bonus for any job a woman works because basically women deserve whatever a job pays + 17% cuz those evil men and their STEM/degree jobs are getting more $$$ on aggregate! in the end modern feminism always seems to come down to MY VAGINA!!!!!!! and in the end since a vagina is just a device (altho a chick once told me that a woman giving you a nude picture is "a work of art" while a man giving you a picture of his junk is "just giving you a picture of a tool") that leaves the focus exclusively on MY/ME!!!!!! and basically VAGINA is just a cop-out to blame all of your problems on something out of your control (unless you were raised gender-neutral i guess) and basically in the end it's just a whole bunch of fat losers getting together trying to cut down society as a whole because they're not getting enough free/ish shit cuz of MUH VAGINA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

whatever. this is why i walk around society at large with earmuff headphones on.... if i started hearing internet-caliber feminist talking points IRL i might start hating life and i genuinely don't wanna do that.

Wow, there's a lot to disagree with in this article.

Third-wavers aren't obsessed with biology. If anything, they're skeptical of it and how it's used to justify misogyny (which sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't). Any postulations that there are differences between men and women that run deeper than reproductive systems are derisively written off as "biotruths." Evolutionary psychology is treated as something less credible than phrenology. Yes, many people would prefer that abortions, if necessary, are safe and legal, but that's a battle worth fighting. Other than that, the movement places primacy on "lived experiences," which is a florid way of saying that anecdotal data is preferable to empirical data, which is largely treated as a tool of the oppressor. Geez, you give 'em enough rope and they'll start saying they're pregnant because they feel pregnant and you don't get to deny them that.

I don't think it's strange to fight for Planned Parenthood at a time when conservative ghouls are trying to eliminate it on the same basis that they're always trying to eliminate the NEA and the CPB: this idea that YOUR TAX DOLLARS are being spent on something evil when 1) they're really not, 2) it'd be worse for society not to spend that money, 3) relative to the military-industrial slop bucket, you're not even spending very much anyway, and 4) fuck you, government spending isn't an Old Country Buffet; you don't get to opt out of the stuff you don't like any more than I get to opt out of the slop bucket. I don't think Lena Dunham's costume is sexy nor cool, nor is it anything greater than standard-issue millennial slacktivism, but yeah, we're better off with Planned Parenthood than without.

Then you scroll down and ohhhhhhh this is just some batshit op-ed from a red-state pro-lifer: "dismantling tiny humans," imaginary Planned Parenthood snuff films, so on, so forth.

Obviously, Wilhelm is a right-winger. And sure, at times she makes boneheaded right wing arguments. But in this case, I think her takedown of Dunham and her ilk is spot on. Are women strong? Do they have agency? Or are they helpless victims at the mercy of any man?

Regarding the abortion part of the article, clearly those Planned Parenthood videos are edited in a certain way. But the fact remains, those doctors are saying the things they're saying. They're yukking it up about dead babies over lunch. That's a fact. And that's a loser for the "pro-choice" movement.

I'm an outlier in that I'm against abortion without any religious basis. (Although, I have to admit the possibility that I am influenced to some degree by my Catholic upbringing. I'm not one of the many CSFMB members who is immune to advertising or suggestion.) But my viewpoint is simply that we're celebrating the murder of children. I think in a few hundred years there is a good possibility that people will look back on American society in the late 20th/early 21st century and call us "the people that killed their babies".

This is a conversation that can't be reasonably had with most women of my generation or younger. I've tried it with my wife. It's a conversation that I imagine to be somewhat similar to one that might have taken place between a Southern planter and an abolitionist circa 1840. One side of said conversation being based solely on the "rights" of the person making the argument.

And more to the point with PP, the murder of black children.

Folks who claim that that PP is somehow necessary and being misrepresented are doing so only try and cast a thin veil over their ignorance or blatant racism, or both.

Is targeting people of color something good, or you were not aware that it is going on?

And do you really believe that society is better off without those being targeted by PP?

One of the best posts on this board in a long time. Good stuff JORR.

I have never understood why there is not more support against abortion from people without religious basis. Sadly, the issue has been successfully pigeonholed as an argument for or against religion.

I think most people are against abortion. No one likes it. But people against the concept are still willing to make provisions for cases where it may be necessary and would prefer to keep it safe and legal than unsafe and illegal. I don't like the idea myself, but I don't see it as baby-killing, either, and especially not as "black genocide."

Because you choose NOT to see the facts about what PP does, hardly makes the facts of their behavior, and your support of it, any more defensible.

Well, that's clearly stupid, but then I've never known anything profound to begin with a pound sign.

I'm against abortion in theory, but if I were to say that every woman should have to carry every pregnancy to term, I think that would make me against women.
