Veteran Josh McCown will start at quarterback and Johnny Manziel will serve as the third option moving forward, Browns coach Mike Pettine announced Tuesday.

Pettine informed McCown and Manziel of the decision after he spoke with Manziel, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo and quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell after Tuesday’s practice. Austin Davis will be McCown’s backup.

Manziel started the previous two games in McCown’s place and was named the team’s starter last week. Pettine explained why he’s altered that decision in the following statement: “Josh McCown will be the starting quarterback on Monday night against the Ravens. I informed the quarterbacks of that decision after I sat down and spoke with Johnny, Flip (John DeFilippo) and Kevin (O’Connell) after practice today. Johnny will be the third quarterback. I’ve spoken to Ray (Farmer) and Jimmy (Haslam) to inform them of my decision, and they are in full support.

“Everyone in this organization wants what is best for Johnny just like we do for every player in our locker room. I’m especially disappointed in his actions and behavior because he has been working very hard. The improvements from last year to this year have been tremendous but he still has to consistently demonstrate that he has gained a good understanding of what it takes to be successful at the quarterback position on this level. It goes well beyond the field. We are going to continue to support him in every way possible, but at this point, we’ve decided it’s best to go with Josh as the starter going forward.”

McCown last started Nov. 1, against the Arizona Cardinals. He’s missed the previous two games with rib and shoulder injuries but said Tuesday he’s feeling better after the team’s bye week.

On the season, McCown is 165-of-254 for 1,897 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. He set a Browns franchise record when he threw for 457 yards in Cleveland’s overtime victory at Baltimore on Oct. 11.

“You want to get a win for our team, for the guys in the locker room and for the fans and the people that support us,” McCown said. “The city has been awesome in how they support us and we need to put a good product out there and win the football game. That is my focus.”

McCown is a better QB than Manziel. Manziel won't become a good QB. Manziel also provides off-field issues.

The Browns are dumb because they've put themselves into a position where these are the options. Not because they've yet again benched Manziel.

No, the Browns are dumb because they yet again benched Manziel. Manziel probably sucks, but he might eventually be good. Either way, you need to find out for certain since this is a lost year. There is no defensible reason to keep starting McCown.

Manziel is young enough you need to see what you have. He has shown some signs this year of being able to play in the NFL.

I already answered that. He won't be good. Ever. Most fans, and 99% of NFL executives / employees / players realized this before he was drafted. His skillset does not translate.

Move on.

This is just simply a false statement. Do better.

Have you watched him play this year? He has shown good progress.

You may not think he will be good. The Browns may not think he will be good. However, they are dumb not to let it play out the rest of the season.

From the fact that this second franchise is still named after a guy that was fired over 50 years ago, to their idiot owner, their horrid drafting, the foolish belief that McCown starting makes any sense, AND to being in the armpit tht is Cleveland, those clowns just can't win.

So the new NFL and Browns Manziel rule is to not only not get into trouble drinking alcohol but none whatsoever?

He went to rehab for alcohol dependency treatment. Folks that go to rehab generally cannot get away with having "just a few, responsibly."

An alcoholic who has already been in the program, probably shouldn't be at a bar partying with champagne bottles.

I realize that. My point is that without trouble or showing up to work like Jay Ratliffe should you bench him or suspend him etc?

Yes. You'd be foolish to think there weren't any strings related to his alcohol abuse / trip to rehab going into this season.

This. Also he didn't get in any trouble after that dustup with his girlfriend in the car. The Browns have given him a lot of rope here,
he is choosing to get tangled in it.

I've said before that the expansion-Browns are mired in a vicious circle of failure dating all the way back to team operations beginning closer to their first game than any expansion team in history, but this is getting ridiculous. That can't keep explaining everything.

This guy is such a fucking tool.

He lied to the Cleveland Browns. And what I mean by that is he told the Browns that video was old. And then, making it worse, he called the people involved with that and said, “Hey, cover this up for me, make sure they think it’s old as well.” That is why Johnny Manziel has been demoted all the way to number three.

Have to Love Johnny Football going to Vegas yesterday with his "concussion" and failing to show up for treatment this morning

Manziel goes AWOL on Sunday
Posted by Mike Florio

Johnny Manziel’s exit from Cleveland may have been sealed by a failure to show up.

Peter King of TheMMQB.com reported on NBC’s Football Night in America that Manziel failed to show up on Sunday morning, as the team requires for players in the concussion protocol. Manziel didn’t show up for the 9:00 a.m. ET meeting with a member of the franchise’s medical staff.

According to King, the Browns tried to reach Manziel by phone, but couldn’t.

Via multiple reports, owner Jimmy Haslam has confirmed that Manziel didn’t show up at the facility on Sunday.

With the Browns now looking for a new coach, they may not make any decisions about Manziel in the near future. With their roster locked until the day after the Super Bowl, the Browns couldn’t cut Manziel for the next five weeks, even if they wanted to.

He's done, no team will sign that clown in the NFL.. His career is over unless he goes to the CFL. It is just further proof what a meathead this guy is.. The backup QB is the sweetest job in all of sports..get paid handsomely to hold a clipboard and no wear n tear on the body.. Look @ Clausen, he blows and has no business in the NFL but he's polite and professional and he's made 20 million.

Add this to the list.

There will be multiple teams going after him.

Though, clearly Dallas is the favorite.

I read another article that said Manziel wanted the bill comped at the end of the night, but the establishment wouldn't do it. He didn't have cash, so ended up signing for it with his credit card. All that trouble to hide your identity, and you leave a paper trail, at the end of the night. What a dope.
