If the Bears cut Gould instead of Marshall and the Jets draft Kevin White to fill their WR void leaving Leonard Williams at #7 the Bears make the playoffs.

Losing Gould: +2 wins, SF and WAS
Adding Marshall: Makes up for Jeffery absence, plus creates major problems when the two are on the field. +2 wins, conservative estimate
Adding Williams: He's a beast.

Let's not have revisionist history here.

Just about everyone around here was ready to escort Marshall out of town.

Bernstein didn't trade Marshall, the Bears did.

Specifically the meddling owner. Judging by the quality of Pace's draft, and the talent scouting that went into it, I'm sure he would've protested trading Marshall had that transaction not been a contingency of him being hired.

"Never get emotional about a stock". It's one of the major downsides to the saturated sports culture that we now live in. The "cancer in the clubhouse" guy has to go each and every time. It doesn't matter if he can still play or not. The team and by osmosis, the world will be a better place simply by getting rid of this guy. "Cut him and eat the salary". "Trade him for a bag of balls". Buy him out. No matter what he simply has to go, "for the good of the franchise".

That mentality permeates sports these days. You see the same thing happening with Derrick Rose and the Bulls right now. Cutting Rose makes absolutely no sense, yet advocates keep making this claim and it often goes unchecked. The same stuff happened with Marshall and it is obvious that the guy still had plenty of game left. He could've helped the Bears as he helped the Jets.

The interesting thing is that the same people lamenting the fact that the Bears have a weak receiving corps are the same people who advocated for the release of Marshall. I caught Speigal and Bernstein doing it before the season started.

He may get his first playoff game!

But, let's not go crazy here. Marshall wears out his welcome everywhere he goes and becomes a problem that must be dealt with. Denver did the same thing. Miami did the same thing. He needs a reset every few years because he has serious problems.

Getting rid of Marshall was absolutely the right call. We'd be hating him right now in Chicago.

And which Bears receiver replaced Marshall? Which Bears receiver came close to replacing Marshall? Marshall was their best receiver. You don't get rid of him without an adequate replacement. I forgot to put "wore out his welcome" in there too. He'd worn out his welcome with a coach and GM that were both fired also. What sense does that make?

I don't know, but the offense has been statistically better than it was last year.

Now that is stupid.

Unless they have decided to do a complete rebuild next year.

And so has the Jets offense. Most people attribute the Bears improved offense to the offensive coordinator, not the absence of Marshall.

So a coordinator is about to make up what was lost with Brandon Marshall, and this is with Jeffery getting injured every week?

According to you the Bears didn't lose much if anything by giving up Marshall.

Yes, and the numbers seem to indicate that is true at least compared to last year.

I'll ask the same question that I ask for other players when people miss them.

What was your favorite moment of the Brandon Marshall era?

His 61 receptions from last yr are more than any other Bear receiver currently has. Those numbers were put up in 13 games. I could also ask what my favorite Matt Forte moment will be once he leaves also. Marshall put up monster numbers in a Bear uniform and he obviously could still play. He also was the best receiver on the team and they haven't found anyone to replace him. That is my argument for keeping him.

This notion that you get rid of guys because they'd "worn out their welcome" is something that has come into vogue during the sports radio/ ESPN era. I'm wondering how getting rid of Marshall has made the Bears better?

I like Forte but I'm fine with letting him walk too after the season.

Jeffery was better than him too but Jeffery has been injured too much this year.

For the first time though in his career, Marshall is contributing to a good team. He's finally showing he has value besides gaudy statistics on bad teams.

With Marshall it is completely true though. Denver gave up on him. Miami gave up on him. Chicago gave up on him. The Jets likely will at some point too though Marshall is getting old enough he may just fade away.

There is a reason that all those teams gave up on someone who was statistically productive.

I think Marshall's presence would have pushed Jeffrey to "heal quicker".

Best WR that ever put a bears uniform on, Glad he finally has a decent QB in Fitz to throw to him.

Anyone else notice (& chuckle at) the NFL.com kiddie clothes commercial where the baby Bear jersey has Brandon Marshall's old number?
