The real money quote is this one:

Quote:
“I know that Calgarians require very wealthy people from New York to come and tell us what we need to do in our community because they understand vibrancy better than we do,” he said.

Really. Smart. People.

The fact is that the age and the architecture of the Saddledome are starting to present a problem. Touring acts are skipping Calgary because the goofy Saddledome roof can't support whatever lighting rigs and stuff they need to set up. (For the uninitiated, the roof actually does look just like a saddle.) The problem is that the Flames are proposing some enormous megastructure that would house the Flames and the CFL team, and they're asking the government to pay for it. Given that the CFL is basically Division II NCAA football with three downs, giant endzones, and one point for a touchback, I don't see why they're entitled to an expensive facility. If the government has to chip in on a new arena, fine, but not this monstrosity they're proposing.

Artist's rendering of what I guess they're calling "CalgaryNEXT," in lieu of anything that's usefully descriptive. I don't know why you need all this. Canadian football is a summer sport, so you don't need a roof. I'm sure what they have now is fine. If it's not, I don't care, no one does, IT'S CANADIAN FOOTBALL. And what do you need a running track for?!? Who's holding major indoor track meets in Calgary? I can only hope that two-thirds of this monstrosity only exists to be negotiated away so that they just replace the Saddledome. Also, this whole thing is supposed to be built on a former creosote plant, so have fun decontaminating that.

Just curious if the thread title was inspired by Lance Storm.
