Big props to Jim McMahon and also the local news media for giving so much coverage to Jim's story about his use of medical marijuana. ABC even led off with it as their top story.

Hopefully this starts a wave of pro marijuana propoganda and we can see some progress in that area in this state. As of now Illinois has the strictest medical marijuana laws in the USA.

Oh and FUCK RAUMER!

I have no idea why this matters, let alone being a top story on the Trib. It was clickbait because it had a Bears player and pot.

Medical Marijuana is being prescribed on a limited basis in this state for the first time. Many people are advocating for an expansion. A veterans group marched on the capital Wednesday with a petition for it. A local celebrity is coming out in favor of it for treating his affliction which is currently a hot button topic and subject of an Oscar nominated film.

I think that qualifies as mattering. And yes, it's clickbait or as they called it pre internet, Sensationalized headlines. Its what they do.

you aren't aware of medical marijuana/legalization legislation and how much/rapidly it is changing here and around the country? You aren't aware of how the marijuana industry is a millions/billion dollar industry and what that might do for Illinois...and what its already done for other states?

Whether you care or not, saying you don't understand how this is part of a large and important story is pretty ignorant.

Right, but its not like Illinois is the first state pioneering this. Its been two years now since Colorado legalized it. On top of this, he basically replaced one drug with another. How has that improved his condition?

Illinois isn't pioneering anything, they're falling way behind every other state that has programs in place. That's the point.

replacing one drug with another????? Ok, I get it, you not only didn't read the article, but you also haven't read/watched/listened to any discussions about this issue despite it being a hot button issue for years. You have to be operating at a high level of ignorance to not know the difference between the effects of marijuana as opposed to the effects of prescription opiads. Here is the cliff note version: One helps with your pain while allowing you to function like a normal human being whereas the other helps with your pain while destroying your body and eventually taking away your desire to even live.

Not sure if they are falling behind. Don't really care. Pot does not cure anything, but I'm glad its being legalized because I know people still can get a medical benefit from it. Colorado has been doing it for two years and the little I have read has told me that its resulted in a significant amount of illegal export of pot out of the state. Perhaps that is what Illinois has to look forward to?

The way I read the article was McMahon used medical marijuana to switch from his addiction to narcotics, right? I don't think pot lets you function like a normal human being, at least it didn't allow me to function normally. And I know as much as I need to about this topic. Just have a read of WebMD:

Smoking pot can increase your heart rate by as much as two times for up to 3 hours. That’s why some people have a heart attack right after they use marijuana. It can increase bleeding, lower blood pressure, and affect your blood sugar, too.

We don’t yet know if marijuana is linked to higher odds of getting lung cancer. But the process does irritate your lungs -- which is why regular pot smokers are more likely to have an ongoing cough and to have lung-related health problems like chest colds and lung infections.

Other physical effects of marijuana include:

Dizziness
Shallow breathing
Red eyes and dilated pupils
Dry mouth
Increased appetite
Slowed reaction time (If you drive after using marijuana, your risk of being in a car accident more than doubles.)

If you’re a long-time user, you can have physical withdrawal symptoms -- like cravings, irritability, sleeplessness, and less appetite -- when you stop.

Wouldn't say bullshit, but alcohol and cigarettes have some of the same effects.

WebMD does partner with the US FDA. I'm not saying they are going to be right 100%, but it is what it is.

Now if you have a headline like, "Small Company, Run By Minorities Instead of Already Rich and Heavily Invested In Entrepreneur, Profits in Medical Marijuana Business", I'm sure that would get some real click-through.

Safer than sugar or caffeine, don't be an idiot.

The fact that they partner with the FDA is probably a bad thing, not a good one. The FDA has to listen to more pharmaceutical lobbyists than WebMD.

Additionally, if you read the description of caffeine it'd sound awful also. None of this shit actually happens. You don't need a doctor or an online resource to know that marijuana is 100 times safer than prescription opioids. You ever watch "Intervention" and see a guy on there for weed? Of course not.

I know you were responding to Shakes. But didn't see Shakes post at first and decided to go thru with the joke anyway.

He also says a Chiropractor was able to get the fluid to drain from his brain, so maybe The Punky QB isn't who we should be taking medical advice from.

In the Punky QB's defense he wouldn't be the first person to fall for it when a chiropractor said, "don't worry, I'm also licensed to do brain surgery."
