Frankly, I think the rise of the nerd schools makes sense if you think about it from a purely economic standpoint. Making a probability-weighted assessment of your potential to make the NFL, it makes much more sense for a high quality athlete (who can pass admissions) to go to these schools. Assuming 5 years, that's well over a $250K value for picking one of these schools. That assumes you assign tuition/board as the "value" of the degree.

much more to the point is that those schools are admitting guys who are not going to leave early which helps to create a team that is more mature, polished and has played together longer. It helps them compete across D1 but when they face elite competition it is still usually lights out.

About the only thing that could make the big schools get on board with paying the players is good enough players being smart enough to realize that they are actually getting a better deal playing for Northwestern than LSU.
