This seems to becoming a trend with players, particularly football players. How is that even possible? I don't remember any accelerated schedule that would let you build up enough credits to graduate early. What is the process?

That is independent of whether they SHOULD be allowed.

I had enough credits to graduate in January. Gordon wouldn't allow it. My last semester I was done with school at 10:30.

It has to be approved usually, but if you have enough credits I don't see how they can deny it. Especially because theoretically you are furthering your education.

i can remember kids graduating early when i was in HS back in the mid-80's, and not specifically for sports. i knew a couple braniacs who graduated early and started college in the winter. i dont think it is a new phenomenon.

It's not new. A couple I went to HS with did it. One for athletics, one for academic reasons.

My senior year was essentially a blow-off year with the exception of the English and Government classes.

At my high school, you could graduate after seven semesters if you took 2nd-semester Brit-lit at the same time as 1st and had the requisite credit hours otherwise. The AP kids never did it because you couldn't do the APs that way and it wasn't an honors course. We didn't have athletic prospects to speak of, so I think most of the people who took early-graduation English were just on a #fasttrack to becoming, like, dental hygienists.

I talk about this from time to time.....I went to Von Steuben for 3 years, and then my senior year I transferred to Guilford in Rockford. When my credits transferred, I already had enough credits to graduate BEFORE the year started (and that's added to the fact that I failed a few classes, too). I just needed to take the Math/English/Gym.

I know you don't want to talk about this, but it gives them an extra semester of free tuition and then a summer session of free tuition. It's rare, but some players can finish masters degrees or even work towards a doctorate degree with it.

What I find more interesting is how some schools have a lot of players graduating after 3 years. It's not all easier majors either. That must be a lot of AP credits.

Taking a summer loads helps. One of our kids started at his school in June right after graduating. He started his Fresh Year in August with 9 credits. He now takes 12 hours in Fall,Spring,Summer.

This is strange to me. I don't think there was any mechanism for graduating early for me. I don't think the school let you overload in any one semester. If anything, people were taking AP classes to have college credits while staying in high school. We had some brilliant people going on to the top schools in the country but no one was leaving early. Second semester senior year was about as great as life could be so it should take something amazingly attractive to move on...especially if you are the BMOC. I guess football would fit the bill for some.

It was probably an option. It just doesn't really benefit you unless someone is offering you a free education starting then.

My guess is even those who would have been getting full rides still had to wait.

Summer School! Refereeing, Tug o war as Physics, or anything else that can be "taught " for an hour by the football coach during the summers in between lifting sessions.

The intent isnt to graduate early, but if a kid has some talent, basically let him or her focus on that sport and recruiting senior year.

I dont know any Catholic schools that offer this. No way they give up a semester of tuition.
