The Rivals.com coaching carousel has only 1 potential candidate.

POTENTIAL CANDIDATES: Rutgers wide receivers coach P.J. Fleck

You're going to be disappointed but here's the list of prospects that I've seen -

PJ Fleck - WR Coach at a 4-8 BCS school (Rutgers)
Scott Shafer - DC at a 7-5 BCS school (Syracuse)
Chuck Martin - DB coach at a 7-5 BCS school (Notre Dame)

This might make you feel better -

Marvin Sanders - DB coach at a 10-3 BCS school (Nebraska)
Chris Beatty - RB coach at a 9-3 BCS school (West Virginia)
Dave Doeren - DC at an 11-1 BCS school (Wisconsin)

If we are going to look at assistant coaches i think you have to look at him. The worst he can say is no and you move on. There will be plenty of candidates interested in our program.

Sweet Jesus...I would do jumping jacks if NIU ponied up $500K+ to hire Gus Malzahn & his offensive genius.

Only reason Fleck is being mentioned is that he is a fan favorite and former player.

Chris Beatty was a one-year RB coach at NIU in 2007.

Malzahn got a new contract with Auburn for $1.3 million/year to be their OC.

Doeren is getting $371k/year from NIU to be the head coach.

Malzahn turned down $3 million/year to coach at Vanderbilt.

That was pretty dumb. Vandy was willing to take a HUGE financial risk on someone with only five years coaching at this level.

If this guy is really as good as everyone makes him out to be then he should have taken the job.

He's making good coin as an OC and he can wait for a job at a place where he can succeed. I honestly don't think you can win consistently in the SEC at Vandy. Why tarnish your reputation taking a bad job?

Malzahn is a rising star who knows he will have numerous job offers from good football programs going forward. Why go to Vandy where there is no way he can compete?

NIU going on the cheap pisses me off. I would have thought that Doeren was making $371K at Wisconsin as D coordinator.

$371k is the base in Year 1, he's probably making $500-600k with incentives and non-salary compensation, maybe more with escalators in subsequent years.

Probably has more years guaranteed than as a DC also - to go along with getting the HC experience.

He has no proven head coaching experience. I wouldn't pay him more than Kill was making here. Kill had a track record of doing well as a head coach.

If he proves he can do a good job as a head coach then we should pay him more. But i see lots of schools overspending and not getting their money's worth. New Mexico is a good example.

Did you give Dave Doeren a raise over what Jerry Kill was making?

I saw this the other day...

I also read that Jerry Kill had to pay NIU $500k to leave his deal, which seems like a lot considering his salary at Minny is only $500k, but it seems he has a number of other income streams.

http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/big-ten-girl/2010/12/big-ten-football-salaries-how-much-does-your-coach-make.html

Quote:
Yesterday in USA Today, the paper published its annual salaries for football coaches at 120 schools.

What does your football coach make at your favorite Big Ten school?

Ron Zook (Illinois) - $1,508,500 total compensation with a $52,650 maximum bonus

Bill Leach (Indiana) - $650,000 total compensation with a $450,000 maximum bonus

Kirk Ferentz (Iowa) - $3,781,000 total compensation with a $1,750,000 maximum bonus

Rich Rodriguez (Michigan) - $2,525,280 total compensation with a $300,000 maximum bonus

Mark Dantonio (Michigan State) - $1,796,700 total compensation with a $660,000 maximum bonus

Tim Brewster (Minnesota) - $808,000 total compensation with a $1,050,000 maximum bonus

Jim Tressel (Ohio State) - $3,888,389 total compensation with a $450,000 maximum bonus

Joe Paterno (Penn State) - $1,109,977 total compensation with undisclosed maximum bonus

Danny Hope (Purdue) - $900,000 total compensation with a $637,250 maximum bonus

Bret Bielema (Wisconsin) - $1,781,759 total compensation with a $350,000 maximum bonus

And the winner is?

Kirk Ferentz. The second-longest Big Ten tenured coach signed a contract extension in September until 2020 that pays him $3,675,000 annually plus a longevity bump that begins at $325,000 and increases annually.

He reached a milestone of 100 wins this season in the Indiana game.

Notes:

Total compensation includes university and non-university

--Northwestern is a private university and therefore doesn't have to share Fitzgerald's salary.

--While Leach and Brewster are gone, I thought it would still be interesting to include the salaries to get an overall comparison of the Big Ten.

--Last season at NIU, Minnesota's new coach Jerry Kill had $347,812 total compensation with a $205,000 maximum bonus. At Minnesota, Kill will have a base salary of $500,000, $600,000 for public outreach and endorsements and hundreds of thousands more, depending on how the season goes.

I am going to guess Minnesota picked up that 500K in some way, shape or form.

That's nothing for a Big Ten head coach. Paul Petrino earns $475k.

As you know, base salary means nothing. But you're off on your bolded statement:

Base salaries for Big Ten coaches in 2010, according to the Daily Illini:

Paterno - $1,038,000
Dantonio - $618,000
Zook - $405,000
Bielema - $400,000
RichRod - $315,000
Ferentz - $302,000
Lynch - $258,000
Hope - $220,000
Fitzgerald - N/A (private)

I believe Paterno has something in his contract where he doesn't make more than the president of the school and he supposedly donates a good chunk of his salary back to Penn State.

I believe that PSU pays Paterno in bubble gum and he has absolutely no clue.

Coach Kill got a pay increase with the extension he signed prior to the 2009 season. But based on initial contracts at time of hiring, Doeren is making more than Kill made his first year.

That $500k guarantee was added to the extension Kill signed prior to the 2009 season. Minny has already agreed to pay it.

You can see the contract and extension for Kill on the Huskiewire.com website here.
