I still think he ends up at Missouri though. They have a rectangular stadium!

Please share with me the biggest ways a school can display their "commitment" to a sports program.

I'd say that building new, modern, expensive facilities is at/near the top of every coaches wish list.

You took a computer generated promo image of a building for which less money was spent in renovation as evidence of Purdue's lack of commitment, comparing it to a picture some dude took in front of his pick-up truck. You used that picture as evidence that the building needs major renovations (which they are making), even though you've never actually been there. I'm pretty sure I've accurately summarized the exchange.

Assembly hall is taller by about three stories, and the cheap seats are much further from the court. Mackey is also pretty small for a Big Ten arena. The two also look completely different from the outside. They both have circular designs, compared to the rectangular designs of Cameron and Assembly Hall in Bloomington, but lots of stadiums have that round design (Breslin and Crisler both have round designs; so does OSU's stadium IIRC, though it's an omni-purpose building).

Except you haven't. You forgot to mention the part where you jumped in making smart-ass comments about things that had nothing to do with the conversation at hand.

I didn't introduce "Mackey" to the conversation. BRick wondered about Mizzou's "commitment to the hoops program" - or possibly he was wondering on Painter's behalf.

I simply stated they just built a brand new arena, therefore demonstrating their commitment to the hoops program. I know that is highly controversial on my part - I apologize. From that point I was trying to respond to what Brick was saying about Mackey. I've never been to the old Riverfront stadium or the Vet in Philly - but I know that they were almost identical on the inside to the old Fulton County stadium - which I had been to. This is no different - they are essentially the same design - as is the one that Utah plays in, and ND, and TCU, and......

IB, your 2nd paragraph basically supports the idea that Purdue's facilities are inferior at this point. I agree. You two also keep saying that they are spending more $$ on renovating Mackey rather than building a new facility. That is probably a bad choice - Mackey is not some historical arena that needs to "live on" yet be be refurbished, in the line of Rupp, Cameron, Pauley, etc... A totally new facility may be a good choice at this point.

They are both circular basketball stadiums. Of course they have some similarities. I've never been there, but I am sure that Wisconsin and Ohio State's basketball stadiums have some similarities too. It's pretty obvious that a building designed around the same shape will have some similarities. That doesn't make it cookie cutter any more than every NFL or NFL stadium is the same shape.

BTW - how can a person tell by looking if an image is "computer generated". I have no idea. I can't tell that that pic of Mizzou is CG.

Please read what I wrote earlier. Painter is mad that his assistants weren't being paid enough and there may have been other issues with travel budgets and other things. If Painter leaves I want the AD fired too for messing this up. The one thing that cannot be denied is that Purdue has put money into facilities.

Mackey is a very nice arena. In actuality, the inside won't be changing all that much. It's more of an expansion of the non-seating area than anything. Once again, let me be clear. Besides the capacity, Purdue fans really like Mackey. Even with a smaller capacity, it's good enough for a fan base that isn't really local enough to get season tickets. Purdue graduates leave Indiana in big numbers after college and the locals don't support the team as well as other fan bases(Indiana, Illinois).

By the way, here is what the renovation is supposed to look like when it's finished this year.

BRick, Can I just make sure, we are talking about Burke as the AD.

Yes. Unless he has an amazing plan B lined up he should be fired or told to retire.

I would guess the very first call goes to Brad Stevens agent. He probably says no though.

You're in the "Painter leaves Purdue then doesn't then does then doesn't but still probably is" thread.

Bucky Chris, that was reported, but since be retracted, it could still be true, but not yet.

Good point. I think she'll accept - sounds like Bucky Chris is pretty committed to Vickie's program.

A friend sent me a link to this site this morning that has this posted regarding Purdue and Painter. Brick, do you know anything about this site? Is it credible?

http://www.boiledsports.com/

Quote:
Boiled Sports has learned that the following note was sent to John Purdue Club members approximately a half hour ago:

Dear John Purdue Club Members:

Thanks for the outpouring of support for Matt Painter and for your concern for our Purdue men’s basketball program.

In an effort to allay many of your concerns and dispel much of the misinformation by “unnamed sources”, Athletics Director Morgan Burke has asked me to share with each of you that he is working diligently with President France Córdova and our Board of Trustees to ensure that Matt remains our head coach for many years to come.

Proactively they have made an investment in Matt that was communicated last evening, clearly reinforcing their continued commitment to him and to our championship program. They did not wait to counter anyone else’s offer. It is my hope that the words and actions of our President, our Board and Morgan will encourage Matt, Jerri and their family to remain with Purdue.

Personally, I have been overwhelmed with the number of e-mails pledging to join the John Purdue Club or increase support. Ironically, I believe we would not be in this situation had more than 11% of our current membership participated in the Mackey Challenge and more than 150 of our nearly 9,000 members recruited at least one new member. More of the Big Ten television revenues could have been allocated for compensation for the basketball coaching staff members and less toward the critical path of updating Mackey Arena.

As a self-supporting university auxiliary, we can spend only what we raise, so everyone’s participation will ensure that we retain Matt and provide championship-quality experiences for every single one of our Boilermaker student-athletes.

Thanks for your continued loyal support and passionate commitment….stay tuned!

BOILER UP, HAMMER DOWN, and HAIL PURDUE!

------------------------------

I'll be sure to check in with Dick Weiss of the NY Daily News for his take on this, but before I do that, let's just think about a few things.
For one, if Burke is indeed making this sort of an effort and attempting to let Matty know how much he means to all of us, then that's good and I am happy Burke is doing so. Should it have gotten this far? Probably not. But all any of us can do is look forward and do what we can from this point onward. If this is accurate, that's what Cordova and Burke are doing.

If I sound a bit skeptical, it's because I am. There's also the possibility that this is smoke being put out by Purdue to soften the blow they will surely receive from irritated Purdue fans and JPC members with deeper pockets than the wealthy and handsome Boilerdowd. Yes, it could be propaganda.

For now, I'm going to give this some measure of credence, since nobody else out there has been able to confirm anything other than that Mizzou really loves our Matty. This content actually comes from a source that could/should know something -- the University. (Well, technically, it comes from the JPC but there's no way they would release something like this without Purdue's consent.)

Also, let's not overlook the fact that if more of you cheap a-holes had joined the JPC, we might not even be in this position. So yeah, it's kind of your fault, fans. Well said, JPC and Purdue. You do your best collectively to make us all dislike you, don't you?

Let's hope this is the potential good news it could be and that the Painter-Burke relationship isn't so far gone it cannot be salvaged.

I got the same email. Ironically, I'm led to believe that Purdue is the only school in the Big Ten who doesn't give 100% of Big Ten Network profits to athletics, but I don't know that for certain. Cry poor somewhere else.

Boiled sports is ok. Really though, they are just fans like me who have a blog. The true reporters of Purdue basketball like Dakich and Rabjohns and Washburn are a lot more positive today. They seem to believe that whatever offer was given last night was competitive.

It's gone from "done deal" for the past few days to complete uncertainty. For the first time since I initially heard the rumors I'm thinking that he ends up staying. There is no logical reason for him to leave Purdue outside of a conflict with the AD or a lowball counter offer. I don't see how Purdue can afford to do that.

60/40 he stays in my opinion. This will be a major wakeup call for the AD though. Basketball and football are what really matter. No one cares if the golf team is good.

They should be. The AD botched this whole thing. The newest report is that Painter took the latest offer from them as a "face saving" measure and he's on his way to Missouri to check out the things there.

If Painter is truly flying to Missouri right now it's over. We might as well hire Indiana State's coach and rejoice in the fact that golf is good and we don't lose money.
