We are losing Matt Painter so we can pay for markers and ink? You've got to be kidding me.

I'm so tired of the school acting like the athletic department is some sort of inconvenient side project. That's fine if you don't give them any financial support but let them keep the money they make without you.

I think Purdue won the national title in Women's Golf last year.

Some Purdue Students are holding a rally today to keep Painter, if he leaves, maybe they should hold one to Fire Burke.

They should be. The AD botched this whole thing. The newest report is that Painter took the latest offer from them as a "face saving" measure and he's on his way to Missouri to check out the things there.

If Painter is truly flying to Missouri right now it's over. We might as well hire Indiana State's coach and rejoice in the fact that golf is good and we don't lose money.

I'm telling you--if Weber is offered the job, he'll take it. And once Bruce defects, we can all enjoy the hilariously absorbing spectacle of comic ineptitude that will be the Illini's search for a new head coach.

I was checking some things on Indiana State's coach Greg Lansing, be a big jump for him, though 1 year at ISU and a trip to the tournament, most of his work was as an assistant coach at Iowa. Most of that was under Alford.

Wow that letter I posted earlier from the John Purdue Club has made it to deadspin and a lot of the Boiler fans are pissed about this part:

Quote:
Personally, I have been overwhelmed with the number of e-mails pledging to join the John Purdue Club or increase support. Ironically, I believe we would not be in this situation had more than 11% of our current membership participated in the Mackey Challenge and more than 150 of our nearly 9,000 members recruited at least one new member. More of the Big Ten television revenues could have been allocated for compensation for the basketball coaching staff members and less toward the critical path of updating Mackey Arena.

So basically it is the Purdue fans that are to blame for this mess. Guess they got a little Kenny Williams in them.

For the rally for Painter, 11 students showed up and Cordova did show up for support.

Here is my take from the comments, could be wrong, and talking with Brick, Purdue hasn't made much from football that they would like, but if they made better money decisions they would be okay and not need as much from football.

What I think will happen, going into yesterday, I thought he would stay, but after reading and hearing things, I think Painter will be the Missouri coach.

Who does Purdue get, who knows worry about that if Painter does leave, but if he were to get Purdue to the Final 4, done more than the last 2 coaches.

Rumors are slowly coming out that Purdue offered Painter $2.3 million to stay and now Painter is waiting until tomorrow to make his decision. If true, then one has to think that Brad Stevens would get the same offer as soon as Butler's season ends.

Painter is now "thinking both offers over" which has to be a positive sign for Purdue as the past 3 days have been filled with Missouri media claiming it was a done deal.

So either the John Purdue Club paid up or there taking the money from somewhere else.

Brick, have you seen anything about whether Purdue has done anything about the money for staff and those things?

Going to be interesting to see what Painter does. Initial reports were Mizzou had offered between 2 and 2.3 million, but their are reports out that say they are willing to go higher if needed because they feel so strongly that Painter is the right guy.

They reported on the local Lafayette news that some John Purdue Club members were put off by this part, they did find 1 guy that was happy with the letter. They asked the lady that wrote if she had to do it again if she would revise anything and she said no.

Looks like were on to Wednesday with the Painter situation.

To add, the local station is reporting that salaries are equal by both teams, and the St. Louis paper is reporting that Painter met with Missouri and they would like a decision by noon tomorrow.

Along with the raise, Matt Painter will get pretty much everything else on the side. My guess is that the $2.5 to $4 million a year that the President was taking from the Big Ten money for dry erase markers and computer paper will be returned and diverted to football and basketball.

The thing is that Purdue can match anything Missouri can and probably go higher if they needed to. The thrifty nature of the athletic department gives them more room to do so. That's why Missouri was desperate to join the Big Ten and get a piece of that money.

I do think there will come a point, say above $2.5 million that Purdue would let Painter walk and instead offer $2.5 million to someone who wants to be there. $2.5 million is more than almost all Big Ten coaches make. Thad Matta supposedly only makes $2.4 million a year.

She wins the "worst timing of the year" award for that. There is some definite truth to that but when your boss has fractured a relationship so badly with a coach that has turned around the program and was an alumni that he's thinking about making at best a lateral move, and really a downgrade in basketball school you shouldn't say it.

This will all be over today. If the reports that Purdue is making a really nice offer are true then I'll be fine either way. Either Painter or the next coach will get all the resources needed to compete and that's the most important thing. I think Painter gives Purdue another chance. I don't think the AD lasts very long though.

I think the fact that Painter seems to be looking around speaks volumes. I think he's gone.

Lot of empty seats at football games. The longer they stick with Hope, the more it looks like Purdue is doing it on the cheap.

So Brick, what do you want to happen here? Not asking what you think will happen, but what do you as a fan want to happen? Do you want Painter back or do you want the opportunity to go after someone like Stevens?

I want Painter to stay without question. I don't even know if Stevens is realistic but I'd still rather have Painter especially if he is given the resources he feels he needs to compete. I think he's learned from his mistakes while on the job at Purdue so I don't think my concerns will be an issue in the future.

My guess is the backlash was pretty strong over that original letter.

This from a St. Louis Post Dispatch columnist:

It looks like this will be a happy day for Mizzou fans.

Not official; nothing announced.

But a source that I greatly trust tells me that Painter is in ... it's my understanding that Alden recently got the call.

Hopefully there will be an announcement relatively soon. And then you can officially celebrate.

Likely news conference later this afternoon.

Don't be surprised to see Painter at Busch Stadium Thursday to be introduced before the game.

OK, so assuming Painter goes to Missouri, can Purdue sign Stevens? If not, will Weber get a call?

I don't think Stevens would go to Purdue.

I would think you would at least need to make the call to Weber and see if he is interested.

I think if Purdue is willing to offer Stevens $2.3 million a year they've got a great shot. Stevens would barely even have to move as he lives north of Indianapolis. He's really the only coach that can save them from a major alumni backlash and Purdue needs to help sell a program currently going through a major renovation.

I don't see any way that they don't try and make a major splash with the new hire. $2.3 million a year can be a significant raise for most coaches.

Weber will be on the list, but so will Lavin, Stallings, Cuonzo Martin, and maybe even outside the box hires like Buzz Williams or Steve Alford.

I had forgotten about Lavin. That's a good name.

I am not sure money will be the main issue for Stevens. I would imagine there will be some other schools willing to offer him that much as well. I would guess Stevens would be really concerned about what happened to Painter and the problems he had with getting support for his staff and the basketball program.

The problem with Lavin is that he was at St. Johns for one year and could build them into a monster given the advantages they have over every school in the country.

The next coach will not have to deal with those same issues. The school that had Keady for 25 years and Tiller for over a decade is learning a hard lesson here.

It would still be an upgrade over Butler who can't even dream of spending what Purdue does.
