Obviously the SEC has had great teams for the recent memory I have of it. One thing I do not understand though is if that conference is so awesome why do they not beat up on each other. You would think more upsets and 2 loss seasons would be commonplace.

NIU isn't from a BCS conference though. That's the major difference there.

I'm a Midwesterner, I went to Illinois, I'm a Big Ten guy. But I can't objectively say that the Big Ten is on the same level as the SEC right now. Now, dan bernstein will act as if that's the way it will always be and segue into his narrative about the bigger, faster, blacker studs. I don't believe that. Gerry DiNardo has some thoughtful things to say about the rise of the SEC. I don't think it's a permanent condition. You know a lot more about the economics than I do, but I believe that the Big Ten is still the most financially powerful conference and its biggest rival isn't even the SEC, but rather Texas football. Several years back when Big Ten hoops were down you heard some of the same stuff about basketball. But I would argue that last year the Big Ten was far and away the strongest basketball conference.
No. The SEC is better. It's not close between the two. I just hate the idea that the SEC is so good that there can't be two teams in all of college football that would deserve to play each other.

So here's an even tougher argument - You have the following teams playing next weekend

#1 FSU (vs Duke)
#2 tOSU (vs #10 MSU)
#3 Auburn vs #5 Mizzou
#6 Ok State vs Oklahoma
#7 Stanford vs AZ State

WHo would be in top 4 for next year's playoffs?

Assume FSU wins.....there's 1. Would Alabama get jumped if OK State wins? Stanford? Auburn or Mizzou would be out of the dicussion - would mizzou jump into top 4 with a win?

It is amazing to look at the rise that Mizzou has taken. :?

Five years ago, Illinois & their fans looked forward to a competitive game with them each year. Not now.

They can pay better since they are now in the SEC.

And the irony is that they left the Big 12 and got better while Nebraska went backwards.

In one year, Auburn and Missouri have gone from having a combined 2 wins in the SEC to playing in the championship game, that's pretty crazy.

So, see there is hope for the Hogs.

Do they still think AJ Derby is a QB? If so, you may want to rethink that.

He was so bad that he was buried on the depth chart at Iowa as a QB, switched to LB and likely would be a backup this year there. He just was a bad QB.

It won't happen for 12 years though.

It's never gonna happen.
Irish Boy told all of us, multiple times, that he knows more about how the college football system works than the rest of us here and there will never, ever be any type of college football playoffs because the big schools/conferences will never, ever, ever let that happen.
We are stuck with the BCS system for eternity.

Wait...hold on.....what?....how soon?......damn, scratch all of that.

Well, the new playoff is basically still the BCS. The NCAA isn't really involved.

I believe Irish Boy said there would be no NCAA run football playoff, and that is proving to be accurate.

The new format won't change for the next 12 years though.

I feel like with the amount of money about to be made they will find a way to renegotiate whatever deals are currently in place. I'm thinking within 5-8 years at most. When there is billions to be made, they will find a way.

He said there wouldn't be any college football playoff at all. And you're never gonna believe this, but IB was slightly condescending and obnoxious when he was stating his "opinions".

So, like BRick has pointed out, IB is wrong for at least the next 12 years.

They couldn't even renegotiate this year and ESPN is the television carrier for the old and new one.

The four team playoff still keeps the bowl system viable. Anything past that and basically they all might as well close up shop as they become the NIT of college football.

Isn't that what all non-BCS bowls already are?

You're right. The NIT is actually playing for something.

In fairness, IB was right about Gus Malzahn. Even before Auburn's title run iirc.

How would a 16 team playoff make the Gildan New Mexico bowl less important?

It almost certainly would be completely gone.

What would stop places like Shreveport, Mobile, Detroit, and Charlotte from holding their own 8-team version of an NIT? At least as much $ could be made off of those lesser bowls (as they do now I'm saying) and the coaches would still get the extra practice they crave.

It could be done. Easily.

I think that eventually happens, though it will be more in the form of a different level of competition with schools that can't afford to pay every athlete $2,000-$3,000 more a month that will eventually come to the big conferences.

The only problem is that it either includes the big schools, and no one cares because it's called the 9th place, or 17th place tournament like the NIT was, or it doesn't include the big schools and it basically is a better version of the FCS playoffs.

I have a feeling someone is going to fuck up the whole NYD football watching thing more than they already have.

NYD should/could have 4-8 1st round "playoff games" played every single year.

That's better than the current format.

Duke could beat....nah....I watched them, they are OK, but they arent a top program FSU will kill them

Yes, SOunds like Oklahoma State can't do anything to get in title game, Florida State and Ohio State win, your title game, one loses Sec winner in and if somehow Ohio State and FLorida State both lost, we could get Alabama vs Auburn/Missouri winner.

What if Auburn crushes Missouri and Ohio State allows another 700 yards against MSU?

I think Mizzou would get in over Bama because they would have the win over Auburn.

Bama's only chance would be to have all 3 (OSU, Auburn, FSU) - then they would get to play Mizzou in the BCS game.
