Isn't this guy just the "flavor of the week" or am I wrong? Also, what kind of a dillweed takes an interview while his undefeated squad spins in the wind? ============== Report: Notre Dame to interview Cincinnati's Brian Kelly on Tuesday December 7, 2009 1:34 PM | No Comments ESPN.com reports: Notre Dame plans to interview Cincinnati's Brian Kelly for its football coaching job Tuesday, most likely in New York, a person close to the situation told ESPN's Joe Schad. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Kelly told Dan Patrick today that he is going to evaluate his future in the next few days and that there is no guarantee he'll be coaching the Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl. Kelly added that he would know his future by Saturday. "There's a chance I could look at another job," Kelly said. "I haven't made that decision yet." He's been the flavor of about the past four years. He pretty much transformed two programs, and brought Cincinnati from obscurity to perhaps the top team in the nation. He's not Turner Gill. |

OK,I'm not an NCAA expert, but I do root for the Irish. They have made too many mistakes lately. |

He did good work at CMU as well. He's probably the best legitimate option out there (i.e., not Urban Meyer or any of that nonsense). By the way, back to the topic of Charles Barkley and how racist it was that Auburn didn't hire Turner Gill: Buffalo went 5-7 this year, and 3-5 in the MAC. They also play in the easy division of the MAC. Auburn rebounded from a disastrous season last year to go 7-5, make a bowl, and won some big games (over West Virginia and Ole Miss, for example) while hanging tough in the others (leading with under 2:00 to play against Alabama). Now, maybe Turner Gill will be wonderful and fabuluous and spectacular. But maybe an 8-6 season shouldn't be taken as evidence of pending unbelievableness, even at Buffalo. |

Whatever happened to the Gruden rumors? I always thought that would be a good fit. |

Gruden or Urban Meyer would be really nice for recruiting... re Kelly: being down 17 in the 3rd by a Wannie led squad and then rallying does not excite me. |

But Buffalo was bad...real bad...like Temple, should be decomissioned from FBS level of play bad. I am a big believer in Gill. Still, his next step should probably be to a second tier team in a major conference. Auburn would be a large step up. Kelly is an excellent choice. He has brought two traditional also rans to the top of their conferences. |

this is true... A defense would be nice tho. |

I think ND could do worse than Kelly. He'd be a good safe choice. His biggest issue is that outside of the midwest and now northeast he's widely unknown and would struggle a bit to pick up recruiting in roads out west that Weis and Willingham did a good job with but in the end ND sells itself and he'd be fine after a year or two. |

yeah, they do...but Weis had a pretty big impact on recruiting, which helped in getting California QB's. Meyer and Gruden would (I suspect) be able to get the coveted Florida "athlete" DEFENSE!!! DEFENSE!! ya know? |

Who needs defense when you can score 40+ a game with Jim....I mean with Gol.... Crap, they better learn to play D. |

The absolute wrong choice is Randy Edsall - good coach, reminds me of Kirk ferentz, but just the wrong MO. Jim Harbaugh would be an interesting hire. |

[quote="Old Man River. Kelly isn't Meyer or Stoops, . .[/quote] I might have to take a look at Meyer pre Florida and give you some analysis on that. I would think Meyer at Utah and Kelly at Cincinnatti might compare favorably...and Kelly may actually look better. |

This is the time to strike if you are Urban Meyer. Meyer is starting to get into uncharted territory for him being at UF so long. He moved from BG after two years to Utah after two years then to Florida. He'll be without his Heisman QB - might be time to consider it. |

Trib reporting it's KELLY: Brian Kelly didn't interview today in New York to become Notre Dame's next football coach. But then, Kelly already may know enough about the job to take it. Kelly held a meeting last week about the opening with representatives of Notre Dame within days of Cincinnati's Big East championship game against Pittsburgh, the Tribune has learned. Talks progressed well enough that the official announcement Kelly will be Charlie Weis' replacement could come as early as Friday -- anytime after Cincinnati's football banquet Thursday night. |

If the rumors are true, I like this hire. I don't care that he didn't come from a top 10 school - all I care about is his ability to recruit and manage the game. Tressell didn't come from a big school and he has worked out pretty well for OSU. |

good dolphin wrote: DegenerateDave wrote: . I don't care that he didn't come from a top 10 school . You are full of wrong today. Ok let me correct. I don't care that he didn't come from a "traditionally" top 10 school. Yes Cincy has had a great year and all - which I think even lends more credence to his hire - but not what I would consider a preferred hotbed of college football. |

If it's not Kelly, then it really gets intresting. I don't think Harbaugh is ready for a big time job, like to see what he does next year at Stanford without Gerhart. The name you could start to hear and Mud may not like this, but is Fitzgerald from Northwestern, I guess there are some rumblings and maybe Brian Billick. |

So has ND not interviewed anyone yet? Was Kelly their guy from the beginning? I'm not so sure the alumni will be thrilled with Kelly. |

Sun Times is reporting that Randy Edsall is back in the picture....is this a ploy to get Kelly to agree or a true interest in Edsall? |

This is become like the Weis hire. The big name coaches who were rumored for months disappear. The smaller coaches but Notre Dame is their "dream job" disappear. The hire comes as somewhat of a surprise who was only casually mentioned prior. At least they have upgraded the search process to avoid "Hire a coach who lies on his resume and is fired before coaching a game". |

Quote: The big name coaches who were rumored for months disappear. The smaller coaches but Notre Dame is their "dream job" disappear. The hire comes as somewhat of a surprise who was only casually mentioned prior. I don't know that is Notre Dame-specific. That's pretty much exactly how the Michigan coaching search went as well; Les Miles was rumored for months but dropped out. Then the Kirk Ferentz/Greg Schiano types were rumored but all dropped out. Then Rich Rodriguez kind of appeared out of nowhere. Then again, Notre Dame probably hopes their search turns out a little bit better. |
