It's the topic that dozens of people around the country are talking about. What will be the fate of Ron Zook amidst recent news that Ron Guenther met with the University president presumably about Ron Zook's continued presence as coach, a 12 month contract extension for himself, and getting some of his neighbor's C student kids accepted into the College of Business. Only 2 of those 3 absurd statements are apparently true. I'll let you decide which they are.

In any case, rumor is that Schulz (the OC) and some assistants were fired by Zook this morning. I suspect Zook himself could be gone by the end of the weekend.

No doubt all the major networks are camped outside IMPE or whatever it is called these days for word. Who's next?

I'm pretty sure we can schedule 12 home games. You think that would do it?

If you can get him, you will dominate the Big 10 for years to come.

Can Ron Zook really be an option to be the "next coach at Illinois"? If so, that athletic department is even more screwed up than previously thought.

The only option that makes sense is for Ron Turner to return to Illinois and Zook becomes the Bears offensive coordinator.

He got the vote from Guenther in October that he was coming back. So, to fire him at this point would be Guenther going back on an assurance that he would not be fired.

I think the pressure is too much though with a number of transfers and rumored transfers from the program, lost recruits, booster unrest, etc. Something has to happen at this point more than Schulz losing his job.

BAD MULT ALERT!!

Understand its not me. I just love the idea of multing with someone who looks like the character and not the actual person

It would be like someone doing a Cowher mult (timely) with Brenly's pic

Or someone doing a RPB mult with a David Faustino avatar.

The problem is that it may be out of his control.

With how much turmoil that is going on keeping Zook would almost be like Notre Dame keeping Weis this year.

Now, I gotta run. We've suddenly got open scholarships at receiver and I've got my eye on the slowest and fattest white guy you've ever seen. He'll fit great in the new "Zook No-Talent System". He's so big I think we can put a 3 digit number on him. See you next Fall, Doc.

Ah. I'm surprisingly ambivalent about all this. If he was to be fired, I guess that would have been alright. But, I'm not all that fired up to see a complete housecleaning and starting over from scratch again unless they were bringing in Bill Cowher or something. There's nobody out there that excites me and the ones that do wouldn't come here.

I just think it's laughable that Guenther goes looking for an extension on his current deal so he can "see this thing through". What has he done with this football program that would make us believe he could do anything to turn this around. So fine, he and Zook each have 12 months to "see this thing through" on their current deals and see what can become of this mess they have made.

They are in the same contract bed now. No need to give Guenther an extension to possibly be in a position to hire a successor and continue his unholy reign of terror on the Orange and Blue gridders.

If news comes out about a Guenther extension, then I'll go ballistic but giving Zook another year doesn't really get me in much of a twist.

The annoying thing is that this isn't even a Dan Hawkins "we'd like to fire you but you're much too expensive" situation. Ron Guenther has sat down, examined the situation, and decided that Zook is the best possible option. I don't understand how that could possibly be a sound conclusion.

Look on the bright side, with Zook still there we can look forward to the Boob Bowl 2 next year.

Assuming things stay the same everywhere (and it looks like they will), there's been an absurd amount of coaching stablity in the Big 10 over the past two years, especially considering how weak the conference has been on the whole.

What does Zook make a year, and I must say I was surprised to see he was signed thru 2014.

It seems that Guenther is trying to leverage this as a contract negotiation ploy. Making a move now does little for his contract renegotiation but having Zook be in this limbo situation keeps the program in turmoil and requires his contract to be secured to provide a "steady ship" to see the program through the storm.

But then I'm a bit of a cynical conspiracy theorist.

We need some crazy T. Boone Pickens type booster to call up and say, "Interim President [Whoever], I have a check in my hand for $100 million dollars. Do you want it? Well, then, here's what you should do."

Can you get on that, Dr. Ken?

OK, but just be warned that I'm going to want Erin Andrews as the Tight Ends coach.

I'd rather be bad at football and have a chance to stare at Erin Andrews's heavenly physique every game as she walks up and down the sidelines, unaware of my tracing her every step, waiting for her to make subtle but highly sexual little gestures like the flipping of her hair, or the adjusting of her tight-but-professional clothing, then...

Wait, I lost my train of thought.

Even though he has years to go on his contract at Illinois, Ron Zook's record the last couple of years after coaching Illinois to the Rose Bowl has been very disappointing to say the least, going 5-7 in 2008 and 3-9 this season. University boosters & alumni are growing very frustrated at Zook's program spiraling downward. I also think the future of Athletic Director Ron Guenther has a lot to do with Zook possibly on the way out.

I still have no idea who in the Orange and Blue Nation supports Zook. Apparently he's got pictures of someone.

If there's any support for Coach Zook, Vince, that support is waning in a hurry...
