Late in the third quarter Pitt puts up a nice drive ending in a go ahead touchdown. Wanne was on the sideline yelling and screaming encouragement to his kids on the bench with his back turned to the field. He continues through the timeout and into the kickoff. As he's doing this UConn takes the kickoff to the house to get the lead back. When someone tapped Wanne on the shoulder to tell him the news the look was priceless. Classic bewildered Wanne.

How has this guy been a head coach of major football programs for going on two decades?

It may help Wannestadt to win the Big East this year and looking good so far, even after last night's loss.

He's just lucky that he plays in a really bad conference and he can show great accomplishment comparable to the other bad teams.

He would have never lasted in most of the other BCS conferences.

He's 39-27 at Pitt which isn't half bad. (59%) He also raised the programs stature in name alone by being a pro HC (10 seasons worth). And has the support of alumni being one himself. The record speaks for itself and would likely keep a job with a nearly 60% win percentage.

I cannot deny he's had moderate success in the weakest of "major" conferences.

A few things that I think strongly indicate how bad of a coach he is: he is something like 3-10 in games for which he has 2+ weeks to prepare. He's been bad in November. He's something like 1-3 on weeknight games this year and never seems to win when the spotlight is shining. That is, of course, simply sticking to his college years.

I think Wanny may have been gone a couple of years ago, but got one of the biggest upsets when he took his team to West Virginia as a 28 point underdog and a WVU win, goes to the title game, but Pitt won 13-9 and Pitt's been pretty good since that game.
