While only the wide recievers coach at Rutgers currently, PJ Fleck is the man for the job.. or at least OC.

They can have Garret Wolfe if they want.

While i like PJ as much as anyone, being a Huskie and all, he's not ready yet to be a head coach on this level.

If we bring him back in some assistant coaching capacity that's fine but i think he kind of needs to stay outside of NIU to grow his coaching pedigree then come back to NIU after having a good amount of years under his belt.

I want NIU to hire someone with proven head coaching experience, like we did with Jerry Kill.

I brought him up in the Indiana thread, but i would look at someone like Jeff Bower.

I like the Chuck Martin idea.

And before anyone says it, no thanks to Mike Leach.

My guess would be they will go the FCS route again and get a 'proven' head coach versus the assistant route.

If they go assistant, someone they will likely look at is Scott Shafer who was the DC at NIU in the early 2000's and has since worked at Michigan, Illinois, Western Michigan and now Syracuse.

Either of the Illinois coordinators would look nice. Both would leave with any success, but so what. NIU should be an attraction for an upwardly mobile coordinator turned head coach.

You can either be a graveyard or a launching pad. I would think the Huskies would be happy being a launching pad.

I'm thinking Hollis Thomas. I was going to say LeShon Cowboy Johnson but I guess he's got a little Mike Vick in him, dog.

Maybe Pat Narduzzi comes back to NIU.

Hollis is a hysterically funny guy. I've got a couple of Button-48's with him too.

He would also replace Mangino as the most unfit college coach of all time.

Actually, his picture showed up in another thread but Mangino would be a fun hire.

I remember the Huskies doing a weekly coach's show at Fatty's in Dekalb. Having Mangino just for that would make hiring him worth it.

I'm serious about Mangino too. I mean come on - got to a BCS bowl, got in some trouble and had to step away from coaching...would be a great place to get restarted at - has enough name to be known and can make bowl games.

Mark Mangino would be an interesting hire, but I doubt that Northern Illinois will go that big...in name for their next head coach.

That was pretty funny when I wrote it the first time, but Northern Illinois isn't the kind of university that hires a big name like a Mark Mangino, formerly of Kansas. If they had deeper pockets, they would have tried to keep Jerry Kill or another high-profile coach from bolting. Seriously.

I just read that Kill won't be coaching the bowl game, don't know if it's true, but whoever is coaching them in the bowl game and if NIU wins, some schools just give the job to that guy, don't know if that's smart or not, but that's what schools do.

I heard that Minny said no to Kill coaching the bowl game.

My guess is that whoever coached them when Kill was in the hospital will do it again.

It's not just Coach Kill's new employers, guys, but NIU Athletic Director Jeff Compher also said that someone else will coach the Huskies vs. Fresno State in the Humanitarian Bowl December 18th on Boise State's blue field.

I think he said that after hearing the request from Minnesota, SHARK

Nice website, but I think you give the guy at least a year before you do something like that. I can see the Gophers being mad when you hear the guys they are talking too and they get a guy from the Mac. I guess Minnesota should have kept quiet and just said nothing.

Even if we had paid him more i'm sure he would have left anyway.

If you want to have easy access to the BCS games (see Connecticut for really easy access) and the only real chance of playing in the NC you have to do it in the conferences that created the system.

We matched the offer our old Athletic Director, Jim Phillips, was offered by Northwestern, yet he still left.

Kill coached all 13 games this year. His assistants maintained the program while he was in the hospital but he made it back in time for the Illinois game.
