SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- New Pitt coach Mike Haywood was jailed on a domestic violence charge after a struggle at his South Bend home.
Assistant St. Joseph County Police Chief Bill Redman said Haywood was arrested about 3 p.m. Friday after a custody issue developed with a woman with whom Haywood has a child. The unidentified woman told police that Haywood grabbed her by the arm and neck and pushed her as she tried to leave.

Redman said the woman had marks on her neck, arms and back.

"The University of Pittsburgh is aware of an alleged incident involving head football coach Michael Haywood today in South Bend, Indiana," the school said in an e-mailed statement. "The University expects the highest standards of conduct from its employees, including its coaches, and any breach of those standards is a very serious matter. The University will decline further comment until more complete information is available."

Haywood will be held without bond in the St. Joseph County jail until he goes before a judge. Redman said that might occur over the weekend, but no later than Monday. Pittsburgh hired Haywood on Dec. 16 to replace Dave Wannstedt, who resigned under pressure. Haywood led Miami (Ohio) to a 9-4 record this season and the Mid-American Conference championship. The 46-year-old Haywood also has been an assistant coach at Army, Ohio University, Ball State, LSU, Texas and alma mater Notre Dame.

The Axe has dropped. They better stay the hell away from Hoke at San Diego State. I would like to see my Aztec Warriors not suck for at least 1 more year.

George O'Leary at ND was the resume issue.
Mike Price at Alabama was the hooker thing.

Anyone else recently get canned so soon after being hired that i'm missing?

Who was the guy the Bears said they hired before he accepted? He went on to run the Cardinals.

Well, he wasn't canned, but Belichick was the Jets coach for a day...

I hope Pitt has a Va tech style shooting after this bullshit. THIS COACH SHOWED FIRE AND PASSION IN HIS HOME AND HE WOULD HAVE HARNESSED IT ON THE FIELD TO WIN MULTIPLE BEEF O BRADY BOWLS.

I was a PITT fan because of AARON GRAY, but my affiliation with them is now officially OVAH!

The team that may come after Hoke, is the team that drilled today by Mississippi State.

How about this person for the Pitt job, Rich Rodriguez, would add some passion to the Backyard Brawl and may let him leave Michigan gracefully.

They may go after Marvin Lewis, who grew up just outside of Pittsburgh.

Really disappointing to see this story. He did a great job at Miami this past year and just threw his life away by being an idiot.

Happy to have Don Treadwell at Miami though.
