I know this topic gets bigger in a month and this could go under the National Media segment, but wanted to bring up something ESPN brought up Thursday on their pre-game coverage.

They brought up the coaches that could be in trouble, and John Saunders asked about Randy Shannon to Mark May and Lou Holtz, and all they said is that Miami would be crazy to do it. I like the Canes and there was no reason to say why he should be fired, I know they like to defend coaches, but it was just like they would be wrong, nothing else. Like a little more discussion, ESPN showed a graphic along with Shannon, Rich Rod from Michigan, Richt from Georgia, and Sherman from Texas A&M, only talked about Shannon.

It may seem a little thing, but would like to see discussion, why he would be let go, nope just crazy if they do. There are reasons guys on the hot seat and they should have mentioned them. I will give it to Lou Holtz for bringing up the name Dan Hawkins from Colorado to be gone.

Since I said I like the Canes, I don't see them getting rid of him, but I don't think losing to Maryland tommorow would help and no Jacory Harris for the next 2 games.

Well this first one has been fired, Colorado is getting rid of Dan Hawkins according to collegefootballtalk.com, just not sure if he get's to finish the season or is done now.

With Colorado moving to the Pac 10, it's time for a fresh change. Hawkins was a bit over his head in Boulder. Never was able to restore the winning ways there.

That sets up a return to Boise after his successor moves on to a bigger job after this year.

To bump, since Shannon is gone, I just wonder if Rich Rodraiguez is next to go, I wouldn't think so getting the team to a bowl, and he may get to stay, but if he does the first thing maybe to get a new defensive coordinator.

Another guy in trouble, a fan favorite here and in Chicago, Dave Wannestadt. I was reading collegefootballtalk.com this morning, and the Pittsburgh papers are calling for his dismissal after Friday's performance against West Virginia.

Rumors that Houston Nutt has resigned at Ole Miss, and somewhat less credible rumors that he is headed to Colorado.

If that's true Irish Boy, I don't know if that would get Minnesota excited, especially when you have heard names like Mike Belloti and Phil Fullmer.

Yeah, but those were pipe dreams. I think the real comparison would be Fedora vs Hoke, Edsall, etc. Fedora seems OK.

This isn't official, and there is some dispute as to whether Fedora was in Minnesota today, fwiw.

The Arkansas State coach has been fired, which is mostly uninteresting, except that Gus Malzahn is from Arkansas. If major programs have been reluctant to give the job to a "mere" coordinator, that would be a logical location. Not expecting that, just throwing it out there.

In all seriousness, Arkansas State might be a better job than Vanderbilt. You can actually succeed at Arkansas State, win 7 or 8 games in a couple of seasons, and move on. At Vandy, you're competing in the toughest conference in the country at a school that doesn't even have an athletic department. Unless you get Chiziked to a better program, you run the risk of people saying "BUT HE ONLY WENT 5-19!!!"

Well, I lived in Arkansas for 23 years of my life and I would bet that Vanderbilt's record has been better than Arkansas States by a decent margin since Arkansas State became Division 1. I don't remember the year they moved over though.

But it would be interesting to see if you wanted to do the research.

I don't think that's IB's point. His point is you can recruit good enough players to win in the Sun Belt, get 7 wins a couple of years and be a 'hot coach' and move up rather than going to Vandy, getting your brains beat in and not being able to compete in the SEC.

Since 1992 (when ASU joined FBS), Arkansas State has been to one bowl (2005 New Orleans). Vanderbilt has been to one as well (2008 Music City)

And I understand that also, I just think that Arkansas State is one of the worst jobs there is. Plus the pay would be significantly less.

The Denver Post is reporting that Jon Embree is being offered the Colorado head coaching position. Embree is a former Colorado TE, and has experience as a positional coach in both college and the NFL. He has never been a coordinator or head coach at any level.

Yeah, pretty much, without the history of recruiting success.

You know, Colorado won a national championship not that long ago. But the facilities are supposed to be awful, and the Hawkins buyout, plus the penalty for leaving the Big Twelve, has probably cleaned the athletic department out. There might be some lean years on the horizon.

I thought I heard Bernsy a week or two ago mention the name Bill McCartney as a possible replacement at Colorado. If I'm not mistaken, I thought McCartney left Colorado to start up the Promise Keepers...

Looks like Indiana has nabbed Kevin Wilson, OC from Oklahoma and former Broyles award winner for top assistant coach in the nation. He was at Northwestern during the Walker years and is probably a pretty good hire. Not someone who will be an Indiana lifer, but I'm sure Hoosier fans will take that if it means a couple of successful seasons before he moves on.

Another level of branches off the 'Hayden' tree. Interesting hire. Could work there - he was better than Chuck Long at OU.

What kind of recruiter is he?

So far what I am reading I like. He comes from a top program which always recruits well. He is familiar with the Big 10 and probably has relationships that would benefit him in the midwest.

Doesn't seem to really be a huge part of his responsibilities. Seems to have two or three recruits to his name per year as primary responsibilities. Lots of four star guys, but it's Oklahoma. None really jumped out but Loadholt a few years back. Had a big haul in 2006 though. Tough to judge.

I dont think that matters per se. As long as he can bring a recruiter with him to coordinate all that, he'll be fine.

One interesting thing: Could this open up the OC position for Mangino again at OU?

I don't know if this is good or bad news, but there are reports that Kevin Wilson, Oklahoma OC is going to Louisianna Tech.
