The meatbag strength coach made them do an absurd amount of lifting which was so over the top that it really messed with their body's ability to function. |

Hope he's not depriving them of water during the workouts. |

There were reports from former players that said they were glad they never did those workouts when they were there. A current player on his facebook alluded to never feeling that sore after a workout so yeah, basically pushed them a bit too far it seems, especially come back to school after the break. Doyle is known for using some interesting workouts (He used to be one of those magnus von magnuson types). |

Well they said on ESPN, maybe some Iowa coaches weren't happy that the kids during Christmas Break, were probably eating and siitting on the couch, so maybe the pushed them a little harder than usual. Since you hear some stuff coming out that isn't good, is Ferentz going to be in any trouble, because now you have parents wondering why he's on recruting trips instead of handling the situation. From collegefootballtalk.com, The 13 players were hospitalized Monday afternoon while Ferentz was out on a recruiting junket. Ferentz remained on the trip visiting potential recruits for at least 48 hours after the fact, not returning until after the first press conference addressing the situation was held. The players were expected to receive another visit Thursday night from Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz returned from the recruiting trail Wednesday and visited the players that night. First, he met with a group of parents frustrated that he didn’t return when the players were hospitalized Monday. “Kirk took a lot of (stuff),” the source said. “But he stood there and took it all. He’s been incredibly remorseful about the whole thing.” |

Take it with a grain of salt, but the local media was reporting that Kirk had been in contact with the parents throughout the situation and they were satisfied with the response. basically the national media is making this out to be a 'program in trouble' type story. My hope is that 1) The kids are healthy and recover well and 2) It becomes a non-story quickly. BTW: It will not impact recruiting. |

I don't care how tenured he is, the strength coach should be fired over this. I don't know who it is, but I am guessing he is some old school body builder type that got the gig before they actually made you go to school for that and get professional certifications. Grandfathered in rule my ass....you should have to have no less than a masters degree in something related to exercise science/biomechanics/kinesiology. Teams are also not allowed to hold off season conditioning without athletic trainers present which means they would have been there and they are educated enough to know the shit this guy was having them do was over the top. Edit: I just went to their S&C site and everyone has the proper educational background/experience and professional certifications........for every sport except football. None of the listed individuals work with the football team. There is no mention of football at all on the site that I can find. |

Look up Chris Doyle. He's actually one of the most respected strength and conditioning coaches in the nation. |

Couldn't agree more with you, HV. The Rashidi Wheeler incident comes to mind. My best advice to Ferentz is to keep his mouth shut. Whatever he says will be misconstrued. |

If he was, he shouldn't be anymore. His history also shows him to be an offensive line coach before being a strength coach. I am of the firm belief that the conditioning/performance staff is to be of a medical/scientific background above a former player/position coach background. It is possible to be both, but highly unlikely. He seems very old school, and while he has won awards according to his bio (and you tend to get those when you've been around for a while and your teams win)this was professional negligence and he has had enough education to have known better. |

I'm not a medical professional and certainly partly an apologist in this case, I'm not sure with this ailment that it can be predicted nor easy to determine what may cause it. Yes, they probably kicked the living hell out of the kids. One report said one of the players did 100 squats in 17 minutes, so 1 every 10 seconds - followed by sled drills. So yeah, seems like an excessive workout but I'm going to guess that this is one done at many other programs in the nation. |

As of yesterday, all have been released. Ferentz fights back too "Now that these students are out of the hospital and on the road to recovery, we can devote our full attention to determining what happened, and making sure it does not happen again,” Ferentz said. “There has been a lot of speculation by those who don’t have the facts and it is unfair and inappropriate for anyone to make wild guesses about what happened.” |

I think they were poisoned by a spy from Illinois. Or they quit on their teammates. |
