St. Johns has become my adopted Big East team but they got incredibly lucky. The refs in the Rutgers/St. Johns game were pathetic in the last minute. They missed two clear fouls on St. Johns and then after a steal by St. Johns the player stepped out of bounds while chucking the ball in the air in celebration with 1.7 seconds left. Replay clearly showed that both of these things were indisputable. The referees, including the notoriously terrible Jim Burr, left the floor and did not review the play because the Rutgers players were mad. I recommend checking out the video once it's available on ESPN. |

Here is the video of the end. There also was a pretty clear foul on the play too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlOWkNBxlTo They may need to replay part of the game today. Keep in mind that St. Johns is very important for the Big East's success in the NCAA tournament, and this kind of loss would have put them down a seed or two. Rutgers is bad and doesn't matter. |

I bet this crew will ref every tournament game Duke is in. Throw in a missed tech for throwing the ball into the stands too. |

No. Bruce Weber had Illinois just as good as St. Johns his first year and nearly won it all in his second.Lavin has done a great job but he's got the very rare situation where nearly every player is a senior. We'll see how he does over the long run. |

So the Big East's official stance is that the play was not reviewable because you can't review travels or out of bounds plays. Just remember that the next time they stop the game in the first half to review whether a foot was on the line for a 3 pointer. Remember that when it's reviewed how much time incorrectly ran off the clock after an out of bounds. Remember that when they do a review of whether or not the ball was still in the players hands at the end when time expired. The NCAA has one of the same problems as the NBA. They let officials who were once very good work forever until they start becoming a big story. Jim Burr does a ton of Big Ten games and he can totally ruin it with how he calls a game. There should be a mandatory retirement age for NCAA officials. That would help with these type of things. |

There appeared to be 1.7 seconds remaining when the gaffe at the end of the St. John's/Rutgers' quarterfinal game occurred in the Big East Tournament yesterday and that the whistles didn't blow. Those refs who blew the end of that game have decided not to call any more games the rest of this tournament. |
