Quote:
KEARNEY, N.J. – A University of Miami booster, incarcerated for his role in a $930 million Ponzi scheme, has told Yahoo! Sports he provided thousands of impermissible benefits to at least 72 athletes from 2002 through 2010.

In 100 hours of jailhouse interviews during Yahoo! Sports’ 11-month investigation, Hurricanes booster Nevin Shapiro described a sustained, eight-year run of rampant NCAA rule-breaking, some of it with the knowledge or direct participation of at least seven coaches from the Miami football and basketball programs. At a cost that Shapiro estimates in the millions of dollars, he said his benefits to athletes included but were not limited to cash, prostitutes, entertainment in his multimillion-dollar homes and yacht, paid trips to high-end restaurants and nightclubs, jewelry, bounties for on-field play (including bounties for injuring opposing players), travel and, on one occasion, an abortion.

Also among the revelations were damning details of Shapiro’s co-ownership of a sports agency – Axcess Sports & Entertainment – for nearly his entire tenure as a Hurricanes booster. The same agency that signed two first-round picks from Miami, Vince Wilfork and Jon Beason, and recruited dozens of others while Shapiro was allegedly providing cash and benefits to players. In interviews with federal prosecutors, Shapiro said many of those same players were also being funneled cash and benefits by his partner at Axcess, then-NFL agent and current UFL commissioner Michael Huyghue. Shapiro said he also made payments on behalf of Axcess, including a $50,000 lump sum to Wilfork, as a recruiting tool for the agency.

In an effort to substantiate the booster’s claims, Yahoo! Sports audited approximately 20,000 pages of financial and business records from his bankruptcy case, more than 5,000 pages of cell phone records, multiple interview summaries tied to his federal Ponzi case, and more than 1,000 photos. Nearly 100 interviews were also conducted with individuals living in six different states. In the process, documents, photos and 21 human sources – including nine former Miami players or recruits, and one former coach – corroborated multiple parts of Shapiro’s rule-breaking.

While the NCAA declined comment, Miami associate AD for communications Chris Freet told Yahoo! Sports the school has been cooperating with an NCAA probe to unravel claims the booster has made to investigators. He added that the university unsuccessfully sought an interview with the booster last summer.

Fucking Butch Davis and Larry Coker. I thought Randy Shannon ran a clean program to the best of his knowledge. Its got to be a pleasant surprise that when you take a new job with a team and come to find out you have years of other people's shit to clean up.

It's kind of adorable how you think the player who used to hand out Uncle Luke's bounties is clean in all this as a coach.

Rob Henry, the Purdue QB job is yours.

Supposedly Marve still isn't 100% and probably wasn't starting the season but I would imagine that his time at Purdue is done.

I don't think its a bad thing Marve is done, unless Henry is hurt. I don't think anyone wants to see the Caleb TarBush Experience. Except RFDC.

Think about how much more shit is going down in West Lafayette that a guy would leave the VIP strip clubs, steak dinners, and prostitution of Miami to go to Purdue.

College football fans can be complete idiots. Listening to Bill King and guys are calling in saying that players should have some of their NFL signing bonus taken to be held accountable - like the NCAA has some legal stake in these guy's future earnings.

Also, that the players are also getting a physical and nutritional benefit from being in these programs, which is an excellent point if you ignore the fact that they are literally contributing to their own death by playing this game for the University's enjoyment and financial gain - most with absolutely no prospects of being a professional and making any actual money for playing.

If even half of this stuff is true, and I think it's pretty much all true and most of it verifiable, then if Miami doesn't get the death penalty then no other program will ever get it again.

I was just talking to a buddy of mine about this very thing. They seriously deserve the death penalty, but I highly doubt they get it.

As a sidenote in all of this Miami stuff, the new Mizzou basketball coach has some connections in it all and has been asked to talk to the NCAA about it

Missouri has had about the worst year you can have.

The Big Ten shuts them down from joining.
The coach jumps ship to basketball powerhouse Arkansas.
They start blabbing to the media that they signed Painter, and then they don't.
They sign a guy who is going to get caught up in this instead.
The Big 12 is possibly going to implode and they have to hope that the SEC wants them.

As severe as the allegations are, I'd be amazed if the death penalty was instituted. What killed SMU wasn't the severity of the charges, but the repeat knowing violations after earlier punishments and warnings. The 1985 sanction to SMU is still the second-harshest the NCAA has ever given to a football program. And then they cheated again.

In fact, I think the 1985 punishment will provide the blueprint here: 25 or so scholarships lost for 3 years, postseason ban during that time, and anyone sophomore or older can transfer penalty free. It's not the death penalty but it may as well be.

Maybe I'm just naive, but I'm pretty sure no one is paying for hookers at Ball State for players. Almost no one even buys tickets. Besides, I can't think of a better reason to play for Akron than a Muncie prostitute. And I don't recall the wild Florida International scandals, either, so its not just the thing you do when you get to Hialeah.

Like a number of other Division I schools across America, the subject was approached to new Miami head coach Al Golden, and he wasn't aware of the Yahoo! Sports story. Needless to say, Golden wishes he was still coaching Temple in hindsight.

In fact, Dan Wetzel, the Yahoo! scribe who's been on top of the story, was a guest on "The Dan Patrick Show" this morning. This is what Wetzel thought of the booster that's in the eye of the storm in Coral Gables:

Whitlock confuses me a lot with his thoughts on college sports. He seems to want players to be "paid" and he thinks it's unfair they aren't but he also seems to think that players already get paid everywhere.

So what is the problem? If there is some guy in West Lafayette, IN who was letting Marve use the schooner he has on Lake Freeman and paying for his drinks at Harrys of over $1 million a year than why do they need to pay the players? That's more than they would make from the school.

Glad for the Lake Freeman reference since I live close to their.

For the team, with Jacory Harris name being on this, I would say Stephen Morris will be the starter.

For the school, I know the Death penalty has been thrown around a lot, but I have heard on ESPN, that when the NCAA used that on SMU, that they never wanted to go down that road again. I see a bowl ban, scholarships lost, and probation for longer than usual.

I would also say that most of the adminstration will probably get canned, like the president and AD.

If you want to rationalize it, you could say to get the good players, you need to do these things, and the top players gets wins and brings in more money for the school.

For us fans, I would say we better hold on, this will get bad before it gets better.

I do have a weird question on Mavre, since he is implicated in this, when the NCAA probably takes Miami down, wouldn't Mavre be ineligible and the games he played in Last season, could the wins be taken away.

Also, I don't think anything will ever bring down college sports, but this Miami thing, affects not only Miami, but Missouri, Purdue, and Texas Tech.

Missouri-Basketball coach Frank Haith
Purdue-Robert Mavre
Texas TEch-Kirby Holcutt, former AD I think at Miami and now AD I thought I heard at Texas Tech.

It's possible and likely that Purdue loses 2 wins from last year if he's ruled ineligible.
