I didn't want to start a thread just for Utah State but they are dangerously close to defeating the defending champs. If Auburn is this bad at stopping the run they are fucked for their SEC schedule. ....so much for that. Dammit. I was enjoying the thought of them losing. |

Well what a great start for the new IU coach. You not only lose to Ball State, but the supposedly brilliant offensive coach can manage only 3 fucking points vs BALL FUCKING STATE in the 2nd half. |

The Steele Jantz era is off to a roaring start in Ames... A win is a win when you are Iowa State...just glad all three of my teams didn't get swept against FCS competition... |

This Georgia/Boise game is one that should be listened to only. What in the hell are they wearing? This nike pro combat line is bold to say the least. |

The new Georgia uniforms are BRUTAL. For the love of god stick to a more traditional simple look. |

Go easy on Wilson and Indiana... he was left with a bare cupboard. And what about Illinois??? I'm not saying Arkansas St. is anything to brag about, but geeeez.... Scheelehaase put up some sick numbers. Sounds like he is delivering on the hype. |

Even though the first weekend of the season is normally the most boring I thought it was a pretty cool Saturday. It looks like Oregon-LSU was somewhat disappointing though. I missed most of that game. The Purdue game was very concerning, but the first game of the season isn't always a good barometer of the rest of the season. I was pleasantly surprised by Caleb Terbush, who came through when it mattered and seemed to improve as the game went on. That's what you need to see for a guy that hasn't played in 2 years. Ralph Bolden looks to have fully recovered from his injury but his playing time was limited by the heat. The defense had some issues but the offensive ineptitude keeping them on the field and the extreme heat probably contributed some to that. I see some reasons for optimism but a Big Ten team shouldn't need a blocked FG to seal a victory against a team like MTSU. Notre Dame looked bad for the half I saw. It's pretty clear that the recruiting rankings completely overvalue Notre Dame players. By the rankings, they are on par or better than any top ten team. They could be 0-4 going to Purdue. I do have to laugh at how Indiana fans were laughing at Purdue barely squeaking by MTSU. The rest of the Big Ten seemed to go as expected. |

I had the opposite impression. Purdue fans making fun of Indiana fans for losing to Ball State is the high school sophomore making fun of the kid who wets the bed when he stopped doing it in the eighth grade. Yeah, it's nice you stopped, but seriously, that's the ground you're going to stand on? Ball State is a terrible, terrible team, and they were better than Indiana in all facets. That is embarrassing; it was probably the worst loss a FBS school suffered outside of Oregon State (Duke lost to Richmond, but Richmond would be favored to beat Ball State I reckon). Indiana has to pray to get to four wins, and that would involve winning two of four at home against PSU, Illinois, Northwestern, and Purdue. Good luck with that. BUT: Purdue nearly lost to an average Sun Belt team, at home. They were outgained by the Blue Raiders by 40 yards; even take that last drive by MTSU out and it's about an even match. Purdue needed a block field goal to avoid overtime against the team that Tim Brewster's Minnesota beat by a touchdown at MTSU. And frankly, that was probably a better MTSU team. The only real advantage Purdue had was in the running game, where Purdue had significant weight advantages over their opponent. That's not going to be true starting pretty soon. Things were so bad at one point Danny Hope put in Sean Robinson, and when that went as well as could be expected, starting warming up a still-injured Robert Marve. The state of Big Ten football in the state of Indiana is a raging, uncontrollable tire fire. Indiana had the much worse day, to be sure. But Purdue fans shouldn't be the one's to tell them (or Notre Dame!) about it. Just be thankful you scheduled the 6th best team in the worst conference in the FBS and move on. ELSEWHERE, I EAT CROW: Northwestern had some breaks but frankly just looked better than Boston College. I'll have more thoughts about this later, probably. Jerry Kill had about as good a debut as could be expected, and maybe even better, but just doesn't have the horses on offense. Not sure how good the USC defense is, but the offense should be strong, and they contained them for the most part. Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, and Illinois all had decent-sized victories against FBS opponents, with level of impressiveness probably in the order I listed the teams. Don't know how much we learned about any of the teams that beat up against FCS squads, except that Iowa is dangerously thin at running back, but we already knew that. |

IB beat me to it. Purdue and IU are both going to suck this year, but we can look forward to the Suck Bowl for the bucket at the end of the year. |

Why are you acting like any Purdue fan thought it was a great victory? It wasn't. Terbush struggled but did improve as the game went on. I think that would be expected from a guy who hasn't played in two years. He led two long drives but was inconsistent at other times. Given that most people seemingly thought that he was going to be a guy that handed the ball off and passed only when no other option was available I think this was good. He's only been the #1 QB for 9 days too. I'm less concerned about the running game than you seem to be. Under Danny Hope they've been able to run the ball pretty well against that bigger competition especially with a healthy Bolden. Shavers looks like a major upgrade from McBurse and Dierking from last year. |

The major Purdue bloggers have been trolling the fuck out of IU and ND for 12 hours now. These are the people Purdue fans have collectively chosen to represent them, through pagehits. This was unprovoked, near as I can tell; I follow both sides. Terbush has known he was going to play for a while; hope has been talking about using QBs all camp, with Terbush as number 2. And he got benched for Sean Robinson, and Hope very nearly benched him for an injured player. The game was a disaster. Yes, it was less of a disaster than Indiana's game. But it was the second worst showing by a Big Ten team, and the gap between the next game and Purdue's is bigger than the difference between Purdue and Indiana.s game. I don't know what blogs you are reading, but the only ones I think are worth it(hammer and rails and boiled sports) don't really seem to mention Notre Dame. They aren't mentioning IU either, but when IU loses to Ball State they will get laughed at. When NIU and Akron beat Purdue they did the same. It's a rivalry. I don't understand your argument. You claim that Terbush knew he was going to play for a while because Hope was talking about using multiple QB's all camp, but you also seem to hold it against him that Hope used multiple QB's in the game. Which is it? Was Terbush benched or was it just that Hope wants to give multiple QB's a chance? You can't have it both ways. Personally, I think that Hope gave Terbush a series off to give him a chance to calm down and get a different perspective. He had to have known that Sean Robinson is not ready to contribute. It ended up working out well as Terbush had a very good fourth quarter. I don't think the game was a disaster. A loss would have been a disaster. This was an ugly win. Hopefully the team we saw in the fourth quarter is indicative of what the team actually is. |

Check Hammer and Rails and Boiled Sports on Twitter. They are beyond fucking obnoxious, and I don't even like Indiana or Notre Dame. If I told you yesterday that Purdue would be outgained by MTSU, pulled Terbush, and won on a blocked field goal, you'd say I was being way too pessimistic. They needed missed field goals to beat a Sun Belt team. That is very, very bad. |

Purdue fans should just be grateful they actually beat somebody. Notre Dame played the toughest opponent of the four schools. Except for Indiana, Purdue has been the next worst team in the Big Ten and their fans should be eating a lot of humble pie by now. |

I understand the issue with Notre Dame bashing, given that they lost to a BCS school, but you are aware that Purdue/Indiana is a rivalry and IU had an embarrassing loss right? If the situation was reversed they'd be all over Purdue for losing to Ball State. If I told you that Terbush would throw for over 200 yards, 2 touchdowns and only 1 interception, and that Bolden and Shavers would go for 162 yards on 24 carries, and they would have won I'd take it.I guess my major point is that Purdue may have figured it out offensively in the fourth quarter. Given the major turnover they had at skill positions from the end of last season that's not unexpected. |

I don't know why they should be eating humble pie. Most Purdue fans know they've been bad for a while. Ironically, losing to NIU and Toledo is one of the major pieces of evidence. However, Minnesota has been worse than Purdue too.

Really? If I told you Purdue put up slightly better than average offensive numbers against Middle Tennessee State at home, you would have been happy with that? I understand the Indiana schadenfreude. Do you understand why it is embarrassing to everyone who doesn't care about Indiana? If Northwestern lost to Ball State and Illinois snuck by Arkansas State I sure as hell wouldn't be gloating about it. |

Irish Boy wrote: Really? If I told you Purdue put up slightly better than average offensive numbers against Middle Tennessee State at home, you would have been happy with that? Given the major question mark at QB and RB I would.I don't know how else to put this. Dvr the game replay they are having overnight, fast forward to the start of the fourth quarter, and watch. While it wasn't perfect there is reason for optimism. Maybe it will prove to have been fools gold based on a bad team or maybe it was a sign that Terbush is slightly better than serviceable and the running game is going to be solid. I'm also hopeful that Terbush looks better in his second start like most QB's do. I will agree that if Purdue plays like that again they won't win against most of the teams on the schedule. Well, I wouldn't either, but Illinois fans certainly would be, and the Northwestern/Illinois rivalry is not nearly as emotional as the Purdue/IU rivalry in my opinion. You are the same guy that has been mocking the PersaStrong campaign so you can go meatball too.

My thoughts on the first Saturday, what happened to the Georgia Defense, they use to be tops in the nation, played well for a quarter and a half, then looked bad. I know they got rid of Martinez to try something diffrent, may have to get rid of this guy after the season, and sadly Richt may be with him. I did wonder how Murray would look with A.J. Green, had some moments, but mostly bad Boise State- Now we will hear all year about should they be in the title game, since they will probably go undefeated. Oregon- I like the Ducks, but Kelly needs to learn games when the good teams have time to prepare for them, 4 of the 5 losses are when a team has about a month to prepare. LSU- Nice win and look like a national title team, but I see the schedule being too tough. Notre Dame- They looked like they were building something good after last season, and yesterday was a big setback, but can be fixed, because they basically beat themselves. After Auburn's big escape, could see the big underdog people will be on this week is Mississippi State. On the Purdue-Iu badness, the State of Indiana football wasn't good yesterday, but the State of Kentucky was bad Thursday. Purdue had to pull one out and now onto Rice to see if they can pull that one out, and for IU, I have a feeling Wilson is a good fit there and fix some things to make them better. |
