Would this mean regular season or would he be allowed to coach in a bowl game? That is dragging things out for too long. |

The Board of Regents is meeting Friday. I expect some additional changes to be made to this. This is likely's Joe's decision. I almost expect Joe and the president to be let go after that meeting. |

16 minutes ago - by Jim Rodenbush - Paterno statement Joe Paterno statement: "I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief. I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today. That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can. This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more. My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this University." Lions RapidReports Piss off you old bastard. Hopefully they fire you effective immediately and remove all traces of you and your precious "legacy". |

I wonder if MUD is worried at all - I believe Fitz is on recored saying that the only other place he'd ever consider in the Big Ten is Penn State. Ferentz still had a kid on the team and a kid in HS - he's not going anywhere for a couple of years. |

Ha! Not worried at all. Fitz is a decent coach for NU (and I stress "for NU"). Would you want him at Iowa? Didn't think so. Doubt that PSU wants him either. Maybe I'm selling him short. He's a good recruiter and a wonderful representative for our school. But I think he needs to accomplish a little more before he's ready for primetime. |

Here's the thing, you have a national power that is going through a hellacious scandal. You are likely to struggle a few years with recruiting and on the field. You have to reshape the way the football team is viewed....Why not get a clean cut coach like Fitz, bring him in, let him take his lumps and when they are in 2013/2014 you have a guy ready for primetime. You won't find any 'primetime' coaches wanting to be close to that place right now. |

I see your point... they need a young (check), squeaky clean (check), guy who can recruit (perhaps a check when actually given a school like PSU). By the way, I haven't heard that he'd ever leave NU for PSU. I'm not sure where you read that. I'm not saying it's not true... I'm just saying I haven't seen it. |

He has a history as he played there and is somehow part of the coaching tree of PSU but I though Al Golden was supposed to be Paterno's replacement someday. He may have to many ties to the PSU coaching legacy to be considered now. |

That has been the thought here but your second statement is the one that could be the problem...plus he would probably have to take a pay cut to come back here. |

My old man claims Fitzgerald is half the size he was when playing linebacker at Northwestern and insists he was doing steroids. |

I'm trying not to be a homer, but I was at school with Fitz, and he wasn't that big at NU. I cannot confirm, but I highly doubt that he used steroids. My wife went to highschool with him at Carl Sandberg and he was pretty squeaky clean even in highschool too. He doesn't look "juiced" in this picture: ![]() |

I was sitting at lunch today when I read this, and I immediately said he should be fired. Every single person sitting at the table with me said I was overreacting...that he didn't do anything wrong. I was the only person at the table who isn't a father. I really don't get it. |

He didn't do anything legally wrong, but Joe Paterno could've done a lot more such as keeping this Jerry Sandusky creep off the Penn State campus. |

I had it in late 80's... it was gone by the 90's. But clearly the folks in Orland Park weren't as "fashion-forward" as the kids in Bay Village, Ohio. |

For the record, Brent, Kirk Herbstreit & Erin Andrews call Oregon/Stanford Saturday night on ABC at 7p, while "College GameDay" is in Palo Alto, CA Saturday morning on ESPN & ESPNU. However, I have a feeling that much of the discussion deals with the stench in (Un) Happy Valley, PA. |

For Paterno to say, that the board of regents shouldn't spend a minute on my status and focus on other things, is just wrong and if he would have taken care this before, he wouldn't be going through all this. Paterno should be gone before Saturday, along with Mcqueary also. Since Saturday is Senior Day for Penn State, what if kid's a senior and when Paterno come and shakes hands, would you extend yours or even want to talk to him. Also, if your Penn State, and you do the house cleaning, do you tear down the building where all this stuff happened, because back to being a parent, you go with your kid on a Campus visit, and you see the building, wouldn't looking at that place just make you sick. |

This old fucker should have been fired already. JoPa along with every coach & administrator knew exactly what was going on. No way this doesn't spread throughout the staff. Penn State didn't want this story to go public, much like the Catholic church scandal. |
