Mike Thomas loves Mac football coaches.
Tom Beckman will be named the new head football coach for your fighting Illini.
Gotta love Illinois going small time for a head coach.

I would have stayed in the MAC over Illinois. Tuesday-Thursday night football is where its at. 11 AM Saturday starts that are only televised on the BIG 10 Network at best is not.

They were on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPN U for most of the season. I had to have watched about 5 straight NIU games.

Hopefully they get VK to stay, otherwise the Illini will be back to giving up 70 pts a game.

I'm not completely sold on this. But, on the bright side, it isn't really anything they've tried before. This is more in line with the basketball coach hiring practice of grabbing guys like Self and Weber.

I'll get on board and see if this guy can really rebuild the morale and discipline of the program. He's got a long road ahead to get the fanbase back.

He seems like a real disciplinarian -

Quote:
Beckman laid out his expectations for the Toledo players with the "Rocket Code of Conduct." The seven-sentence list includes "I can always be heard saying please when asking for something," and "Phrases such as: good morning, be safe, how are you and have a great day are part of who I am." The last line reads: "I am the respectful Rocket!"

A similar code, with a change in the name, is likely for Illinois.

Beckman's "Rocket mission statement" mentions the football team as a family. It closes with "We will be the class of college football and the Mid-American Conference."

Beckman and his team will be heavily involved in the community.

He's going to love Nathan Scheelhaase.

I just meant in terms of saying please and thank you.

If you read Scheelhaase's Twitter feed, he makes Tebow look like a Hell's Angel.

O'Toole has to speed up his delivery or guys will be jumping his balls like he's not a Hell's Angel.

The problem with this hire is that this doesn't get the fanbase excited, will have to win first, Sumlin or Leach could have been better picks.

As much as you don't want to say, Kansas hire of Weis gets more people excited than Illinois hire of Beckamn, right now, in a year or two, could be saying something else.

There really isn't much of an Illinois football "fanbase" anyways. If the guy wins next year, it will be great. If he loses, Illinois fans expect it.

I think the "fanbase excited" thing is overrated. Are people really going to games to see Kevin Sumlin or Mike Leach? They'd still likely want to see results on the field before these fair weather fans finally decide that season tickets are worth it.

If anything, a new coach who isn't Ron Zook should make the biggest difference in attendance. At least you can sell the fact that the up and down era that he had is over and over the next few months they can start to justify how bright the future is.

According to the guy on Mac/Meat this morning the team will be good at competing in bowling and softball. So there is an upside...

Basically Illinois needs a culture change and Beckman is a guy who can deliver that. He's used to dealing with mobile QBs and power running games. He's done great things for a school that doesn't typically get impressively-sized recruits. He also has some Ohio connections, which should help. Admittedly he might not have Zook's uncanny ability to recruit (read hire) 4 star talent. But he'll be able to develop the 2 and 3 star recruits much better than Zook ever did.

What kind of "great" things has he done? Isn't his record like 21 and 16?

Most of those 16 losses were to BCS schools.

I believe he lost to OSU twice and Boise St. twice among some others, including NIU twice which is like a BCS school.

Ok. So what are the "great" things he has done tho? Losing to good teams?

Just seems more like a hire that Indiana would make instead of Illinois. But maybe the 2 programs are closer than I realize.

Toledo had just suffered through three losing seasons and a point shaving scandal that led three of their players to plead guilty to gambling charges. So he turned around a program in utter ruin into a back to back 8 win program and two bowl appearances.

I never said he did anything "great". I was just commenting that 1/4 of his losses came to recent National powerhouses.

Who were they realistically going to get? I heard they made inquiries for Chris Peterson but that was never going to happen.

No Big Ten schools have hired big name head coaches outside of Urban Meyer and the ones that have recently haven't fared too well - Rich Rodriguez? Guys like Ferentz and Dantonio and Tressel and Bielema all came from nowhere so I can't really say coming from Toledo is really all that big of a deal.

I'll bet if you paid that guy $1.75 million/year, he'd tattoo his entire body orange.

Tod Beckman? Who the fuck is that? It sounds like a SNL character.
It's sad that our state school can't get a bigger "name" than this.
They should have brought in a NFL coach with a personality.
Gruden,Billick or how about Jeff George. It sounds like a recipe
for disaster? What does Tod Beckman sound like? It sounds like 2-10.

Yes, I'm sure Jeff George would have been a better choice.

He could have just setup his office at Kam's while he hits on co-eds and double-parks his Corvette convertible out front.

Then he could have left a year later to be the coach at Purdue.

Since Beckman's last name has two syllables it doesn't lend itself well to using it as a disparaging verb about Illinois' play the way Zook's name did. In other words, you won't here about the Illini being "Beckmaned" the way you heard about them getting "Zooked".
