In the most heated rivalry in college football! The contest goes back centuries. Boilermaker fans sitting around ancient bonfires telling their children horrible stories about the evils that occur in Iowa City. Likewise, Hawkeye storytellers telling their offspring about how the gods think their black and gold is superior to those in West Lafayette.

You see what I did there? ;)

I will step on BRick's Purdue Pete doll and take the batteries out of his train.

Almost as bad as the semi-new saying "Makers All".

That thread makes all the sense to me. The two worst fan bases i have come into contact with are Iowa and Purdue.

The Iowa fans at Soldier Field were downright disgusting.

The Purdue fans were a bit more tolerable than the Iowa fans. They at least shut up after we beat them. Although, that boiler up chant is so damn annoying.

Yeah, that group was a bit out of hand. Not defending the fan base that showed up in Chicago, but come down to Iowa City and you see how the real Iowa fans are. I've never seen an issue with opposing fans there but remember the Chicago crew are the same schmucks that go to Evanston every other year and act like they own the place too. (Mud will likely agree with that) See you at Soldier Field next year. :-)

I'm sure you are right. Usually your bandwagon fans are the one's who are not representative of your true fan base. I'm sure many of those people at Soldier Field were not true Iowa fans.

They do own the place. When half the stadium (the loud half) are in black and gold, then yOu earn the right to call it Kinnick East! I've actually always had good luck with Iowa fans. But there is a distinct difference between Iowa fans born and raised in Iowa and Chicago-suburb kids who go to Iowa. Regardless... I'm more than jealous of any team who can regularly sell out their games.

Good win Vince. I really don't know what to think of this team.

I don't believe this. First of all, I don't remember you ever mentioning you were at NIU's win against Purdue. Maybe you did. Second of all, I've been to a lot of Purdue vs. MAC games and it's pretty tame. If you were a Notre Dame or Indiana fan I'd understand if you were treated bad.

Also, Iowa fans aren't bad at all. They are very low on the list of bad fan bases.

Also, I have to laugh at your "that thread makes all the sense to me" statement. The whole thread is a joke making fun of the Big Ten classifying Purdue and Iowa as rivals. Pretty funny that you seemed to take it serious.

Me neither. With the way Purdue played (very poorly), Iowa should have buried them but did everything they could to keep Purdue in the game (fumbling in the end zone, fumbling while going in for a score, missing kicks). Iowa is about where I expected them. Prediction going into the year was 7-5 or 8-4. If they can win Friday, they get 8-4 else the flipside. They are really going to miss #7 next year - he's a freaking monster.

Yeah. It looked like a NFL wr was out there. Purdue has some good corners and they were helpless.

Yep... the thread was made in jest to basically tease the B1G for manufacturing a rivalry that isn't there through a protected game. Oddly enough, apparently NU vs. Purdue had a similar manufactured rivalry at one point. Correct, BR? Maybe Purdue has no real enemies save Indiana.

Northwestern and Purdue used to be protected rivals until this year. They had to drop it so you could always play Illinois.

You need to visit Lincoln, NE. I've never been treated to so many free beers in my life. It was almost creepy how nice they were. And it wasn't forced or fake. The true litmus test was they were equally as friendly after the upset as before.

My guess is this: When Iowa plays in Chicago, every alumni (avg age is like 25 then) that lives here comes out of the wood work, gets trashed and acts like crap. I've seen it at NU - I saw it there. In Iowa City, it's a completely different vibe. People are respectful, talk to their neighbors and may get a bit drunk but they don't harass visiting fans.

My guess is that Iowa fans were simply loud and had more fans at an NIU home game.

Seriously, MAC vs. Big Ten games don't ever bring up intense emotions. Even when they upset them the ire of the fans is more on the Big Ten team that blew it than the opposition.

Had nothing to do with having more fans. That doesn't explain the need to be immature.

If you were around for the tailgating scene that is when many of them were acting like asses. I can't comment on the interaction at the game because i was surrounded by NIU fans.

Other NIU fans had the same negative interaction with Iowa fans. Hopefully 2012's game will be better.
