With the retirement of Norm Parker as DC and the departure of Ken O'Keefe (OC) to the Dolphins, Iowa is on point to do something they have not done in Kirk Ferentz's tenure - hire new coordinators. In addition when it was obvious to Rick Kaczenski that he was not the next DC, he left for Nebraska and left a hole as D Line coach. What has Iowa done?

- Promoted Phil Parker(no relation to Norm) from DBs to DC. He performed this job well over a few seasons when Norm was struggling with complications from his diabetes. It made complete sense that he would be the choice. There were rumors that they were looking at Tom Bradley (PSU) and John Hermann (Giants LB coach, former Michigan DC) but it made sense to keep it in house.

- Moved Reese Morgan from OL to DL. Reese has done a great job with the o line and will do a good job working with the D Line. He's very much a teacher and with a younger D Line the next few years, this is what they need.

- Slid Darrell Wilson from LBs to D Backs. This was more sliding someone to a position he knows (he played DB in college) to give someone else an opportunity. Wilson is one of the top recruiters on staff as well.

- Brought in Brian Ferentz to lead the OL - 3 year starter for the Hawkeyes back in the early 2000's was recently coaching TEs for the NE Patriots. Kirk told him before that he should get experience if he ever really wanted to come back home. He did 4 years with the Patriots, 3 as assistants (quality control, scouting and offensive asst) before getting a full coaching role. While his last name is the same, he's earned the spot.

- Promoted LeVar Woods to LB Coach: Woods played 7 seasons in the NFL and spent the last 4 years as an assistant in the Iowa program, helping with recruiting, film break down, pretty much whatever the coaches wanted. He stepped into a DL role for the Insight Bowl when Kaz left for Nebraska and is being rewarded for his hard work.

So what's left? They still need to hire either an OC or QB coach. The money is on Erik Campbell being promoted to OC and retaining his WR duties and David Raih being promoted to QB Coach. Raih is a former Hawkeye QB who coached at UCLA before coming back to Iowa as a grad asst. And it would completely be the more things change, the more they say the same....
