Do you think a small college guy or how about a Chicago inner city HS Coach?
Do you get a "recruiter" and surround him with great assistants?

shaka smart is not taking the illinois job..no chance neither is brad stevens...best bet would be a chicago coach who can recruit the public league.

I like the way you think Jimmy. Illinois and Northwestern should pool resources and just hire one coach for both programs.

I think both schools need some new blood. NU knocking on the door (4 straight NIT's) not good enough.

I don't get why people think the public league is some magic bullet. Of course they have some great players but those guys are going to Kentucky or Kansas. The rest of them aren't any better than the best guys from other parts of Illinois. In reality, they'd be better served getting a guy who could recruit Indianapolis and St. Louis. I am having a hard time coming up with a successful team in all of college basketball that does it primarily by recruiting Chicago well. Recruiting Chicago is fools gold.

Chicago players by the top 6 Big Ten schools:
MSU: 0
Ohio State: 1
Michigan: 0
Wisconsin: 1(but he barely plays)
Indiana: 0
Purdue: 1

Now, there were a few from the suburbs, and a few from other parts of Illinois, but the Big Ten mostly ignores Chicago players. Ironically, Illinois has 5 players from Chicago, IL right now, which didn't seem to do them any good.

Illinois and their fan base need to get over the idea that Shaka Smart is coming to town to save the day. Not going to happen.

Maybe they can lure Steve Alford out of New Mexico?

I would think NU would actually be a better job. You get to be king shit in a non-currupt environment and not have to deal with all the politics surrounding a job at a public institution. Only downside is recruits need to able to read.

I mentioned this in another thread but if the AD had any balls he would take a run at Kevin
Stallings out of Vanderbilt. He grew up in Illinois and I wouldn't be surprised if he at least
thought about coming back home. Did a great job growing the Illinois State program in
the late 90s. Not sure what his contract situation is but he is a damn good coach off the
old Kansas coaching tree.

pearl would turn this program around, i don't care for the guy but he would be a great hire... fools gold? nah.. izzo is imo the best coach in the country and if he had the talent he would have a half dozen championships by now.

it is not a coincidence that when depaul or illinois is very good they have chicago talent. just because the big ten has a hard time landing chicagos' top talent does not mean they would not be better off landing a wade or rose.

Wade was a prop 48 player out of high school and was not considered a top level recruit. For every Derrick Rose you have ten Calvin Brocks coming out of CPS. The Illini made that run in 05 and their best player was from Texas. They need a coach who can recruit high level players and it doesn't have to be just from this state.

The CPL is an absolute cesspool. I would not want my school to be messin with that crap. 10 heartbreaks for every success story.

Wade wasn't a Chicago kid either and no Big Ten team even recruited him because of grade issues. Of course getting Rose would be good but elite talent like that goes to Kentucky and gets paid. Bringing in a coach to get the Dwayne Wade types will either be a major failure or get your program on probation.

What part of Chicago was Dee Brown from?

Recruiting Chicago normally equals CPS and other schools in the city limits. You counting Joliet too?

Here is the breakdown of the Illini that went to the Final Four.
Code:
4   Luther Head (capt.)   Chicago, Illinois   Sr.   Guard
5   Deron Williams (capt.)   The Colony, Texas   Jr.   Guard
11   Dee Brown (capt.)   Maywood, Illinois   Jr.   Guard
15   Calvin Brock   Chicago, Illinois   Fr.   Guard
33   Rich McBride   Springfield, Illinois   So.   Guard
34   Fred Nkemdi   North Riverside, Illinois   Sr.   Forward
40   James Augustine   Mokena, Illinois   Jr.   Forward
41   Warren Carter   Dallas, Texas   So.   Forward
42   Brian Randle   Peoria, Illinois   So.   Forward
43   Roger Powell, Jr.   Joliet, Illinois   Sr.   Forward
44   Marcus Arnold   Chicago, Illinois   Jr.   Forward
45   Nick Smith   Valrico, Florida   Sr.   Center
50   Jack Ingram   San Antonio, Texas   Sr.   Forward/Center
55   Shaun Pruitt   Aurora, Illinois   Fr.   Forward

Only one guy from Chicago that mattered. A few from the suburbs and a few from central Illinois and others from other states.

Keep in mind that the Illini currently have 5 players listed as being from Chicago, IL.

It is a totally different recruiting culture.

I'll be honest with you (as much as it pains me to say it), NORTHWESTER IS A F___ING GRAVEYARD FOR COLLEGE BASKETBALL COACHES. Why would anyone go there? Your hands our tied by Admissions and you are playing in a highschool gym with subpar facilities. And the fans that do show up are the same fans that occupied those seats in 1948... and the same guys who ask me to sit down when I stand up to cheer for my team.

Next b-ball coach at Northwestern? Tavaras Hardy... the assistant coach. Has some great connections to local AAU. Unfortunately that will just be enough to keep us mediocre AT BEST.

P.S. I'm sad and frustrated today.

Pat Forde put it best:
"But it’s hard to feel sorry for a program that continually underachieves and a fan base that only gives lip service to caring about it."

yeah...throw joliet in there too...there is no reason why illinois and depaul should be this bad.. just too much talent locally ...so the 3 best guys on the illinois team were head/williams/brown..2 of the 3 were homegrown...the last time depaul was good they had that kid from lincoln park..bobby simmons and quentin richardson..all chicago players.

If Bill Carmody can't get Northwestern into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history, who does?
