Yep, most scouts are telling him he'll be a 1st round choice, which means guaranteed millions, and if he stays he doesn't know how he'll be used with the new coaching regime.

Poor decision, indeed.

I'm with spmack here. This is his shot to get multi-millions of dollars. Do you really think his stock will improve significantly under the tutelage of flavor-of-the-month MAC coach? He wants the money for his family for financial stability. I have absolutely no problem with him leaving. If you've watched NBA basketball this year, he actually wouldn't be that bad as is given his height and athletic ability. He's in the top 75% of the league on day #1. If I were Leonard, I would leave without any doubt... I honestly thought the only way he would stay would maybe be if they kept Weber around. Otherwise, too many changes, and you might as well go with the changes that are going to pay you.

If someone guarantees you millions, you take the money. End of story.

He seems to be a top 20 pick, getting him a 3 year guaranteed deal for $10 mill. You have to go espeically if your family needs the money and I think his does.

The second team that gets him will get a good player as he still has development to do.

If he is the #20 pick as projected, he will make about $5M for his first three years. Also, he will most likely be on a good team that doesn't need a center, so he will play off the bench. So when it becomes time to get his second contract, he will only get a contract for a guy off the bench.

If he played one more year, he would have a very good chance to be a top 5 pick, make about $18M his first three years, be on a team where he would be the star and get a max extension.

Plus, he is just not good enough to play in the NBA right now. Way too immature and makes way too many dumb, dumb, dumb decisions. This isn't football where there is a high probability of getting hurt. All he did now was do a good job hindering his future earning potential with this move.

He wouldn't have a very good chance to be a top 5 pick or he'd be a top 5 pick this year. Of course he could get significantly better in the next year but he could do that in the NBA too while getting paid and treating basketball as a full time job.

He'd also be one year closer to that max extension.

Not to mention, if he had a bad sophomore year, he could lose the $5 million guaranteed. By declaring, he locks in that he'll have a multimillion dollar contract. As we all know, the first million is the hardest to get.

Big Chicagoan's right. The League will eat him up and spit him out unless he matures pretty damn fast.

I can't think of another Illini player that I could care less about as a pro than Meyers Leonard.

I wish him luck and he certainly has potential. His best attribute is as a shot blocker which he
may be able to make an impact with. He is going to have to work really hard in the weight
room starting right now.

Sorry man, if I'm from little Robinson, IL, and people are telling me that I could be a millionaire in a few months, I'm going for it.

He'd be no less of a millionaire next year. He's not going to get worse.

He was average to invisible for over half the year and he's still a 1st rounder.

I think if Jared Sullinger would have come out last year, he would have gone higher.

That's because he was good last year. Plus, he's like 6'7".

Leonard wasn't all that great and will still be 7-feet.

I understand why he'd go. I just think, for his own career, he'd benefit from 1 more year, both mentally and physically.

Agreed. I'm not 100% sure he'll be bad. He might be something. I just don't care that much.

Overall, though, I think there is more upside to staying 1 more year than there is risk to staying. But, whatever.

From ESPN...
Quote:
Maybe life would be better for Tracie, his {Mom.} Once an athlete herself, a woman her son said would run more than 10 miles a day, she instead has been more or less housebound since James died. The one-two combination of an old horseback injury and disk surgery has left her with chronic and crippling back pain, delivering her a new double blow of cruelty -- she can't work because of the back pain but can't afford surgery because she can't work.

Tracie is not a complainer, but her son knows his mother and knows her agony. It is physical and emotional, the aches of a back that won't let her move and the heartache of being unable to see either of her boys -- one because he is overseas, fighting for his country, the other because she can't stomach the two-hour ride to Champaign.

I thought it was purely financial troubles, didn't realize about the medical condition.

He probably made the best decision from a personal standpoint.

Agreed ( with Doc ), I hope the best for him. He has some unique physical tools and if he is a mid to late
first rounder he may be able to build up his body and learn from someone willing to take him
under their wing. I have just heard too many things about him being immature that worry me.
