http://www.illinihq.com/sports/illini-sp...do-it.html Quote: How are they doing it? Former administators and media followers offer interesting observations. Let me enumerate their thoughts. — Admissions welcome marginal students, including junior college transfers, and they tend to stay eligible. Somebody tell this guy to do some more research before spouting off excuses as to why NIU has been successful and Illinois program hasn't. Under Novak, NIU rarely, if ever, brought in JUCO players. Novak built the NIU program with high school players from Chicagoland area. Even today, we only have seven JUCO players out of 109 (only 6%)on our roster. So NIU obviously isn't doing it on the back of JUCO players. Also, marginal students? NIU Football ranks 5th in APR, while Illinois is 51st (Source). If Illinois wants to turn around its program maybe it shouldn't hire a defensive coach who lost three of four to us while giving up a ton of points in the process. |

Give it up. Illinois is a much, much better program. The gap is just too big. |

For the few of us that actually support the idea of a "student-athlete" rather than a "minor league athlete" for a college player, it means ALOT. Graduation rates mean even more. Particularly if you're gonna try to set these kids up to succeed after college. |

What I'm saying is that NIU having a better APR than Illinois does not mean NIU can't get more marginal students than Illinois. But anyway, I'm sure Northwestern never ever fudges with their numbers like those big bad state schools. |

Our APR is arguably more "real" than many others. Simply less classes/majors for students to "hide" in like Kiniesiology or other Basket Weaving majors. Communications Studies is probably the only true "easy" major at NU. I actually took a few of those classes... they were'nt blow offs. I did, however, take a nice "Intro to Rock N' Roll" class. That was fun. ![]() |
