I know recruiting is a big part of coaching college football, but it's hard to compare Saban to pro coaches because of how much more talented his teams seem to be than the opposition. |

Hard to do this, because ideally college athletics isn't a professional league. In addition to having major inequities (admissions, program monetary support, location, facilities), a college football coach's job is not simply to win games. You have a responsibility to develop the kid and graduate your players. Certainly Saban excels in one major area, but I'd argue that his resources and the inherent inequities of college athletics makes it a hell of alot easier to do this at Alabama than some place like Boise or Utah or NIU even. Same with Chip Kelly. I'd argue if NIU beat Florida State, that is easily a better success story than 'Bama's this year. |

And believe it or not, there are some out there that actually believe in the idea of a student athlete. Even if you believe that college football is essentially minor league feeder for the NFL, you can't disagree with the tremendous inequities that make comparisons VERY difficult. |

College's do not pay coaches millions of dollars to graduate a handfull of students. They pay them millions of dollars to win games and make the school more money. I'm not saying its right, but it's the truth. Schools care very little about the "student" part of student athlete as it applies to football and basketball other than making sure they get passing grades so they can continue to play. That is why they allow students who would not necessarily qualify for their school to get in anyways. The only reason graduation rate is an issue, is because the NCAA made it one by banning programs from the postseason if they do not meet the bare minimum of requirements (see UCONN). |

I'm saying its a component. I never said it was the major component. I don't disagree with anything you said, but there are some of this who think college athletics IS and SHOULD BE different. It may not be, but in my opinion, Saban's job was easier because he doesn't have to worry about admissions, graduating players, resources, etc. If you popped Gary Andersen in Tuscaloosa, could you expect a similar result? My guess is yes. |
