If K-State proves it can beat Kansas tonight, Bruce Weber could go 29-2 in the regular season. Ugh. ![]() ![]() |

I just think it's interesting that the guy can go to another program and have such immediate success. It really makes me wonder what happened last year for that team to fall apart so completely. Maybe it is just the player's mentality. Bardo lit into this year's Illini team saying they'll quit if you just punch them in the mouth. Can't really disagree. |

I don't think that anyone ever questioned Bruce's ability to coach. I think the only thing was like, hey, here comes Bruce into your living room to sit down and tell you why you should forego whatever traditional/powerhouses might be interested on you to come on down to scenic Champaign/Urbana IL and mix up some Orange Crush to ultimately get some Orange Tang. Who was the coach b4 Bruce @ K-State? Was he some kind of recruiting wunderkind? I can't say I'm a college basketball maven, but it's already been proven that if Bruce steps into a situation with someone else's well-recruited players he's quite good at coaching them up and making a run. Therefore, if he's got Dusty's fabled "horses" they're gonna have some fun before they go out to stud. |

He had Meyers Leonard and Brandon Paul last year with some decent role players and that team was a pile of suck. |

Doc, do you believe it was a Weber thing, or a series of situations at Illinois that worked against him? - Following Self was a problem. Nobody wanted a small school coach...unknown recruiter. - I got the impression IL couldn't compete with really strong recruits because IL wouldn't pay. The blue chip recruits always went elsewhere. IL got recruits sort of rated high, but never materialized. Were those players overrated to begin with? Any idea why true talent never came here? - It seemed he had at least one assistant coach that was there as a favor to certain recruits for coming. There was the one in Peoria specifically. From the time Weber arrived I always got a feeling he walked into a time bomb and it just kept getting worse. All issues ultimately fall on the coach. So no matter what, his time was up. Am I way off base at looking at some of the challenges he faced? I am quite comfortable at being completely wrong, so feel free to go all scorched earth if it is necessary. |

I wouldn't disagree with anything there, except maybe the paying part. I don't think that truly cost them anyone. Following Self was a problem but he got beyond that with the incredible buy-in he got from Brown and Williams that still speak fondly of the Weber to this day. The Carlwell/Smith fiasco really set the program back 2 years and they never really recovered. Getting Richmond on top of the previous class of Paul and Richardson was supposed to be what put them over the top and we all know how that went. In the end, nothing ever really worked out in his recruiting and it caught up to them. The classes weren't poorly rated, they just ended up having problems, many off-the-court. It will be interesting to see what he does with K-State when his own players start arriving and see if he has the same issues. I don't think he will. |

Weber looks good in purple. I did not know the part of him almost going to College of Charleston. K State was a great opportunity for him. |

He's going to crater that program. His recruiting has been terrible, again. |
