I still maintain NU is a coaching graveyard due to subpar facilities and ungenerous admission standards. But this hire is about the best thing that NU could hope for, in my opinion. I'm not convinced that Collins is any great basketball mind. When you are an assistant with a cast of McDonalds All-Americans, I'm not sure you've really proved yourself some basketball genius. In my mind basketball is about recruiting and I think Chris Collins' energy, competitiveness and connection to the Chicago basketball community will serve him much better than whatever Carmody had. And having a dad who was a well-respected NBA head coach can't hurt. I think NU basketball got a shot in the arm yesterday with this hire. I'm not convinced much will change. But the energy level in the program (what little there was) has to improve. |

The Collins' are pretty hard driven people. I wold expect him to work tirelessly. I also think he has many existing inroads in Chicago recruiting as Duke was always in the mix for the best players in this city. Any kid getting into Duke should be able to get into Northwestern. The facilities do suck but there are plenty of things to sell about NU that are superior. He doesn't need to get 5 star players. Get good players who will stay for 4 years. |

I think it is a good hire and agree with everything the GD mentioned above. I have no doubts that he has a good network for recruiting. I am interested to see who he is bringing with him as assistants. |

He has his work cut out for him. I heard Mac say moments ago that it's a 7 year deal for Chris Collins to get Northwestern where no other men's basketball coach has taken them...The NCAA Basketball Tournament. |

That was my first thought. He goes there until Coach K retires. |

He looked like the heir apparent at Duke and I'm sure Krzyzewski was going to be pushing him when he was nearly dead and ready to quit, but eventually Collins realized he was going to end up like Bill Guthridge. |

How many times do I have to tell you that Wojo is the heir apparent. Duke is a cushy job for an assistant. They make great base pay. They make great side money from things like camps and USA basketball. They recruit only the best players and really have to battle against 4-5 other schools. It is just too good to leave until you reach a certain age and realize you have to spread your wings or be a lifetime assistant. |

What better way for a long shot to up his odds to get the big chair than by winning at a losing program. He's got the assistant's tenure and the program pedigree, he just needs to go out and do the unthinkable (and previously unattainable) and put NU in a NCAA dance. Once he's done that he'll have his pick of chairs to coach from and with the proper timing the chair at DU will be open. |

My brother-in-law told me today that he heard Doug would be interested in being an assistant. I checked online and saw nothing regarding this. Anybody else hear this? Doug Collins BTW not Doug in Evergreen Park. |

Doug Collins BTW not Doug in Evergreen Park. Doug has mentioned before that if Chris was ever a head coach he'd love to be his assistant. That's all. It's not like he's said he's quitting the Philly job. Though he may get fired. |

I'm stunned how easy it was to hire Chris Collins. Am I over-inflating his pedigree? I just can't think why any coach would ever want to coach for Northwestern. You have two arms tied behind you. I really wonder what they promised him. Facilities are a long way off. While Welsh-Ryan is the most likely to get funds next, they still need to finish the Lakeside Football Facility, which I presume will take a few years. I know it seems odd coming from me, but what is so attractive about the Northwestern job that he was so quick to take it? |

Pretty emotional speech at Chris Collins introduction. He's talking about this being his "dream job" and "loves Chicago" and "wants to be here a long time" and blah blah blah. I suppose I should be happy about that, but strikes me as a little insincere. Even I don't get that worked up for Northwestern... and I'm like one of the schools three real fans. ![]() |

He was THE Cinderella story. Mediocre recruit who was 2-time Defensive POY playing for the perennial doormat of the Big Ten. He gets his dream job at his alma mater where he is revered for doing the impossible... leading the team to the Rose Bowl. He lives in the city where he was born and raised and married his highschool sweetheart. That stuff seems to make more sense for Fitz to be so passionate about Northwestern. Maybe its just me. Frankly, I hope Collins is genuinely excited to be here. He has to be to sell ice to eskimos (recruit kids to play for NU). |
