The Big Ten Network currently has a marathon of old football yearbooks. It contains a lot of really cool footage and it's cool not only how much has changed but how much has stayed the same.

So I'm watching the 1957 film season, and the quarterback was under center but standing at a 45 degree angle to the center and they snapped the ball directly to the running back. Is this still legal? I've never seen that done in a game now. It doesn't look very effective though.

At least in high school its legal. You do not have to snap to the qb.

Wouldn't whoever takes the snap be considered the quarterback in the eyes of the rule? The wildcat offense is, in effect, a direct snap to a RB.

Yeah. The only difference here is that that quarterback was under center, but basically standing behind the offensive lineman to the right of the center, while still having his hands there like he was taking a center snap.

I guess to put it another way, if a QB is under center, can another player actually get the ball instead of the quarterback?

The rule is you can not have a planned fumble on a snap. That is all. You are also supposed to tell the refs before the game if you have any goof shit you may run.
