Northwestern is slowly transforming itself from "We don't care about sports but we'll be rich upon graduation" to "LOOK AT US NOW! LOOK AT WHAT WE HAVE! PAY ATTENTION!". |

You gotta remember. NU students and most of the athletes too, were the biggest fucking dorks in high school. Isolated losers who had no friends. Then you throw them all together in one place and bad things happen. Very bad things.... |

I remember one of the BB players, a typical NU recruit, tall scrawny white kid from Texas. In the media book, he listed his favorite pastime as hanging around at the Burger King on Orrington Avenue. |

Quote: The Facebook page explains: "CHICAGO SKYLINE: NU is Chicago's Big Ten Team so the skyline was integrated into the uniform to represent the great city they play for." Right, OK, so the pants are aspirational, as all pants should be. Northwestern, located in Evanston, is "Chicago's Big Ten Team" only in the sense that it is, geographically, the closest. Spiritually, it has no more of a claim on Chicago—a University of Illinois town, even in the lean years—than it does on the Kingdom of Bhutan. Northwestern is just like that guy you meet who tells you he's from Chicago even though he's from Naperville. Own your city, man. http://deadspin.com/northwestern-to-wea ... 1498595359 |

I mean, Northwestern technically has a Chicago campus. |

Because it's so hard for, say, Terry Boers to follow up "I'm from Mokena" with "It's about an hour southwest of Chicago"? Or "Schaumburg: a boring suburb where people go to shop and wait for the sweet release of death about 45 minutes Northwest of Chicago". Being from somewhere or not is a binary thing. Ernest Hemingway is known to be from Oak Park, John Prine's from Maywood--not some rheostatic misinterpretations of Chicago's city limits. And it avoids awkwardness later when someone visits you in Toronto or San Diego or Chicago and finds themselves stuck out in Brampton or Chula Vista or Arlington Heights. |

That's why anyone from the Gary suburbs should say "Gary" because everyone knows where Gary, Indiana is too. |

Like BRick said, one cares where you specifically live except for the people in the area. Not to knock you specifically, but the Schaumburg comment is another reason why people don't bother. No one really wants to deal with the city arrogance. |

It is such a pain in the ass to live in the Chicago, you shouldn't be able to claim it unless you actually do. |

I've lived in Chicago proper a decade or so and when I first moved here and would travel to other places and someone would ask "where from?" I'd initially say "Illinois" which would prompt a "which part" and then I'd say "Chicago" and they'd seem a bit peeved I didn't lead with that. Now when I lead with "Chicago" I occasionally get "which suburb" which I attribute to folks from the suburbs going around falsely claiming to be from Chicago. I'm not sure people from Gary should even claim Gary as their hometown. |

Well, the rest of the country thinks that only poor people, gang members and Barack Obama actually live in Chicago. Take it as a compliment they thought you were suburb-worthy.

Not sure why exactly, considering it's something of an entertainment and shopping destination for the NW burbs, but Schaumburg really does suck. Haven't been there in a while, but iirc it's on their signs, "Welcome to Schaumburg, It Sucks Here." Other suburbs should point to Schaumburg like Beavis and Butthead mocking Winger-wearing Stewart. "Arlington Heights: Hey, at least we're not Schaumburg". |

Northwestern needs some real facilities if they want to claim anything. DYKE RYAN AON field is like visiting a junior college. Tear that and Welsh Ryan down, build a real cool facility that people want to come to. Maybe ALL the seats are awesome and thus you only hold 50,000, maybe the food is top notch, maybe the tailgate area has some amenities, like bathrooms, shelters, grills, etc. Northwestern could actually pull this off. They have a fan base, they are smack dab in a neighborhood full of people with money and they have a student body that wants to seem crazy. They are never going to be Michigan, Ohio State , etc so take what you have and make something different and cool. Yes, you will then need to build a basketball arena for Dougs kid, but thats just another issue that needs to be done as Welsh Ryan is one of the worst athletic facilities I have EVER been to. The seats are the very worst. That faded purple looks like someone didnt finish the floor. |

Well, since we're going to have a North Side school play in a South Side arena, it only seems fair to build a gym for the North Shore school in Northwest Indiana. East Chicago's Big Ten Team. |
