Virginia led by the best offense in college baseball gets the pre-season top spot. Oregon St with one of the best pitching staffs comes in at #2. Indiana who returns many key players from last years Omaha squad comes in at #3. Cal St Fullerton (my pick to win the CWS ) comes in at #4 while North Carolina St and their two potential top 5 picks (Rodon and Turner) come in at #5. The SEC leads all conferences with 8 teams in the top 25 followed by the ACC with 6 teams and 3 each for the Big 12 and PAC-12. 1. Virginia 2. Oregon State 3. Indiana 4. Cal State Fullerton 5. BA did a breakdown of the top 25. Louisville has a number of players from the Chicago area. Friday night starter Kyle Funkhouser (Oak Park-River Forest), Saturday starter Joey Filomeno (St Rita) and Closer Nick Burdi (Downers Grove South) will play significant roles while Freshman OF Corey Ray (Simeon) OF Colin Lyman (Huntley), Inf Nick Solak (Naperville North) and Zach Burdi (Downers Grove South) could make an impact. 20. LOUISVILLE- 2013 Record (Ranking): 51-14 (8). RPI: 14. 2014 LINEUP Pos. Name Yr. C Kyle Gibson Sr 1B Danny Rosenbaum So 2B Zach Lucas Jr 3B Alex Chittenden Sr SS Sutton Whiting Jr LF Jeff Gardner Sr CF Mike White Jr RF Cole Sturgeon Sr DH Grant Kay Jr. NA Tr.—Iowa Western CC Pos. Name Yr. LHP Joe Filomeno Jr RHP Kyle Funkhouser So RHP Jared Ruxer Jr RP Nick Burdi Jr -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hitting: 50. Louisville must replace five regulars from last year’s Omaha team, but it welcomes back its two leading hitters in Sturgeon and Gardner. Sturgeon makes consistent contact and walks more than he strikes out, making him a good table-setter. Gardner also has a patient approach and can drive the ball with authority, making him a physical presence in the middle of the lineup. Whiting, like Sturgeon, is a good athlete with a knack for getting on base. White and Lucas give this lineup two more prime athletes who showed signs this fall of turning the corner offensively, though White still needs to turn in more consistent at-bats. Seniors Chittenden, Gibson and fellow catcher Shane Crain are scrappers, and juco transfer Kay should be the most dangerous righthanded hitter in the lineup thanks to his physicality and solid approach. Power: 40. Gardner is the only imposing power hitter in the lineup, but he can launch rockets over the fence on a line. Rosenbaum is similarly physical and could provide some additional pop from the right side, and White has intriguing lefthanded power potential, but the rest of the lineup is filled with contact and gap hitters. Speed: 70. Even without the departed trio of Adam Engel (41 SB), Ty Young (26) and Coco Johnson (22), Louisville is loaded with speed. White and Whiting are both premium runners who have been timed at 6.5 seconds in the 60-yard dash, while Lucas and Sturgeon can run it in 6.6. Kay gives this lineup a fifth well above-average runner. Newcomers Matt Rowland, Colin Lyman and Corey Ray bring even more speed off the bench. Even Rosenbaum has solid speed at first base. Defense: 60. Whiting lacks premium arm strength but has good range and is the vocal leader of the defense. Chittenden and Lucas have both seen action at shortstop during their collegiate careers, bringing more athleticism to the defense. The Cardinals are fortunate to have two senior catchers who both handle pitchers well in Gibson and Crain. Sturgeon is a standout right fielder—though his arm plays better off the mound than it does from the outfield—and the rangy White “looks like an NFL wide receiver playing center field,” as the coaching staff put it. Starting Pitching: 55. The Cardinals lost all three pitchers who served as weekend starters down the stretch (Jeff Thompson, Chad Green and Dace Kime), but their replacements have even more upside—and more risk. A 6-foot, 230-pound bulldog, Filomeno has a huge arm, with a 92-94 mph fastball that has bumped 98 in short stints along with a sharp power curveball in the high 70s. Funkhouser, who split time between starting midweek and working in the bullpen last year, works downhill with a 92-95 heater that hit 97 in the Cape Cod League; his slider flashes average but needs consistency, and he must develop his changeup. Ruxer has also shown 92-94 velocity at times along with a plus changeup, and the Cardinals hope the development of a power slider this offseason will help him miss more bats and return to his 2012 freshman All-America form. Should one of them falter, So. RHP Anthony Kidston (5-0, 1.31) should be able to handle a weekend rotation spot thanks to his competitiveness and his ability to locate an 88-90 fastball and two swing-and-miss offspeed pitches (curveball and changeup). Bullpen: 65. Burdi has the strongest arm in college baseball, with a fastball that sits at 98-101 and a ridiculous 92-93 mph slider. He made the expected leap to star closer as a sophomore, throwing more strikes and blowing hitters away with his overpowering stuff. Sturgeon serves as a fearless setup man who goes after hitters with an 88-92 fastball from the left side. Jr. LHP Kyle McGrath gives the Cards a second proven setup man who commands a high-80s fastball and a good breaking ball. Burdi’s younger brother, Fr. RHP Zack Burdi, has shown 92-95 heat and a promising slider, and fellow newcomers Drew Harrington and Ryan Lauria provide more depth. Experience/Intangibles: 65. Four key everyday players return brimming with confidence and Omaha experience, and most of the new starters are veterans who have seen plenty of action in part-time roles during their careers. The only question mark is how the new weekend starters will handle those roles, although Ruxer and Kidston have both pitched on Sundays in the past. Louisville also has a superb coaching staff, including the co-recipients of BA’s 2013 Assistant Coach of the Year award, Roger Williams and Chris Lemonis. Baseball America OFP: 55. Louisville entered last season with a top-five preseason ranking and embraced the lofty expectations, winning 51 games and knocking off mighty Vanderbilt in a road super regional. This team does not look quite as potent offensively and is less proven on the mound, but its overall athleticism and pitching upside should make it the favorite in the new American Athletics Association, and a threat to make another deep postseason run. |

Here ya go, Hawgaroo. 25. ARKANSAS 2013 Record (Ranking): 39-22 (18). RPI: 30. 2014 LINEUP Pos. Name Yr C Jake Wise Sr. 1B Eric Fisher Jr. 2B Brian Anderson Jr. 3B Mike Bernal So. Tr.—New Mexico JC SS Brett McAfee Jr. LF Joe Serrano Jr. CF Andrew Benintendi Fr. HS—Cincinnati RF Tyler Spoon So. DH Krisjon Wilkerson Jr. Tr.—Pearl River (Miss.) CC Pos. Name Yr. RHP Trey Killian So. LHP Colin Poche So. RHP Chris Oliver Jr. RP Jalen Beeks Jr. Hitting: 50. A below-average offense was the culprit for the Razorbacks’ somewhat disappointing 2013 season, when they ranked No. 3 in the preseason but found themselves on the road for regionals, where they lost. The team’s top three hitters are back, led by Anderson, the lone .300 hitter in the lineup a year ago. Anderson’s swing got long at times in the Cape Cod League, but when he stays short and compact, he rips hard liners all over the field. He and Spoon both control the strike zone well, and Spoon showed a knack for timely hitting as a redshirt freshman last year. Serrano’s plate discipline could be better, but he has a good feel for his barrel and a No. 2 hitter’s bat-handling skills. Benintendi figures to lead off as a freshman thanks to his advanced approach and the surprising strength in his 5-foot-10 frame, which earned him comparisons to Kentucky’s Austin Cousino out of high school. The burly Wilkerson also has a short, simple swing and should make an immediate impact. The Hogs are still waiting for Fisher to make good on his offensive promise, but the fundamentals of his lefthanded stroke are sound. Power: 40. Anderson has slightly above-average to plus raw power, but he is more of a doubles hitter currently. Spoon and Wilkerson also have some juice to the pull side, but don’t expect either to reach double figures in homers. Power will not be this team’s calling card. Speed: 50. Benintendi is a slightly above-average runner, but his baseball speed and quickness are better than that. McAfee has plus speed but is not overly aggressive on the basepaths. Anderson is a 55 runner, while Spoon and Serrano are decent runners also. Arkansas ranked 209th nationally in steals per game last year. Defense: 55. The Hogs struggled defensively last year as well, fielding .964 (172nd in the country). But they should be better in 2014, with two upperclassmen anchoring the middle of the diamond. Wise is in the lineup for his strong catch-and-throw skills, and McAfee is a quick-twitch athlete with excellent range and a strong arm at short. Bernal and fellow juco transfer Bobby Wernes are both strong defenders at third, and whichever of them develops more at the plate should earn the bulk of the playing time. Fisher is sound at first, and though Anderson is still learning second base, he has the range and plus arm strength to excel there after struggling with his throwing accuracy in the past on the left side of the infield. Benintendi is a take-charge defender in center, Spoon is a plus defender with a strong arm in right, and Serrano is an average left fielder with a below-average arm. Starting Pitching: 55. Arkansas led the nation in ERA last year but lost its entire weekend rotation. This rotation has a chance to be special if the three new starters can live up to their potential, but all three have much to prove. Killian’s deceptive crossfire delivery and good control make his stuff—an 88-92 fastball, an average slider and changeup—play up. Poche has gotten stronger and shows similar velocity from the left side, along with a plus changeup and decent slider. Oliver showed huge stuff in a middle relief role last year, running his fastball up to 97 and flashing a filthy power slider at 85-86. He’s also making progress developing a changeup, giving him a chance to start or relieve. Jr. RHP Jacob Stone, an athletic and polished juco transfer, has a solid four-pitch mix. Bullpen: 55. Beeks looks ready to replace Colby Suggs at the back of the bullpen thanks to his poise in tough spots and his good command of an 89-92 fastball, a swing-and-miss 80-82 slider and a decent change. Oliver could also vie for the closer job if he doesn’t start. Jr. LHP Michael Gunn throws strikes with an 87-88 fastball and has excellent feel for a sharp downer curve at 77-78. So. RHP Landon Simpson has an 88-90 fastball and a solid slider that is effective against righties. Newcomers Dominic Taccolini, Zach Jackson, Alex Phillips and James Teague help replenish a staff that lost seven drafted arms last year. The big-bodied Taccolini has the highest ceiling of a group, with a fastball that has flashed 94-95 in the past but sat at 89-91 in the fall. Experience/Intangibles: 55. Wise, Serrano and Anderson started on the Hogs’ 2012 Omaha team, and three other position players earned starting roles last year. The inexperience on the pitching staff is a wild card; if the talented young arms mature quickly, this team could be very good. If they wilt under pressure, the Hogs could struggle to make a regional out of the rugged SEC. Baseball America OFP: 55. Expectations will be more modest than they were going into last year, but there is still plenty of talent on the roster. Even if the Hogs go through some growing pains early, they could be very dangerous down the stretch. |

Absolutely. Northern teams are at a tremendous disadvantage because they don't get to practice outside then they travel to play Southern teams who have been practicing outside for a month. I am a little surprised at how much Indiana has struggled but they will hit eventually. They're just too good not to. |
