Quote:
A first-class arena and practice facility downtown, they say, is also on the way. It would seat 10,000 people if and when completed — maybe in 2017 — and would cost taxpayers a figure that grows by the day.

Is there still any chance we can wiggle out of this one?

If you would hope any Chicago college basketball team would be big time do you plan a 10k seat arena?

We need Rahm to start handing out city jobs to parents of players and signing bonuses in bags Blue Chips style for college basketball to be relevant in this city.

I don't think DePaul is really interested in being a big-time basketball school, or at least the AD isn't interested. They'll take the publicly financed new arena, though! :D

Remember when Joey Meyer's success wasn't good enough for this program?

This has been thrown out there many many times. The big issue nowadays is your best players are playing AAU ball and travelling all over the country so they have better exposure and also not afraid to leave home anymore. So why would you choose DePaul when Kentucky is calling you (like Ulis), or Kanasa (like Cliff) or Duke (like Okafor, Parker)? DePaul gets the scraps that the big schools don't get.

You could say the same about Xavier, Villanova, Cincinnati, Memphis and a bunch of other inner-city schools that always seem to be good and occasionally great. The AD problem is right on.

New York seems to have a similar problem to Chicago but Philadelphia really keeps a lot of its kids in its various schools.
