I was this close to giving it all up to coach football, but then I saw poor Jerry's retirement presser,

Good for Kill, if any coach was going to die on the field it would be him. On the other hand it may be one of those times where the dude dies immediately after anyway and it didn't matter. Man that was gloomy of me, yeesh.

Seemed like a really good guy, and to see anyone have to walk away from something they love is never good.

One of my former business partners- a guy I absolutely hate, by the way- was a punter for Kill at SIU. I went to an SIU-NIU game in DeKalb with this goof and he took me to meet Kill before the game. Kill was polite and everything, but I got the distinct feeling he didn't really know who this asshole was.

I love guys like Kill. They give the game texture. Bald, non-corporate fucks like me. Always prepared with 2nd tier talent like me. Guys like Bill Snyder, Frank Beamer, Gary Patterson are in the same category. They build something and stay.

It's a rare thing to see genuine emotion in sports these days. Football coaching isn't some noble calling but I can empathize with a guy who can no longer do the one thing he loved to do the most.

The world needs guys like this (and Bobby Knights). That said I was surprised Boers was touched by him in the second half telling today.

Was this the 2007 game when SIU scored 20 in the 4th Q to win? That was a great 12-1 SIU team, went to the championship game & lost to Joe Flacco's Delaware Blue Hens.

Yeah, that was an awesome game. I was with a bunch of SIU guys. My good friend, Mike is an SIU grad. He sat next to the punter and the punter's girlfriend. The punter spent the whole game explaining to his girlfriend what was happening. He sounded like Matt Bowen or something. After the game, Mike said to me, "That guy has his girlfriend convinced that he's Joe Montana." There was an NIU family sitting behind us with a mentally challenged son who was high school age. The kid was giving us shit the whole game until the fourth quarter. He kept asking Mike what a "Saluski" was.

I remember NIU having a rough game that night, but I didn't realize it was so bad that SIU just let their punter sit in the stands with his girlfriend.
