X-2 is just way more fun the 2nd time around than X. X just seems (well is) a death march to the end, while X-2 is a blast. Now X is still good and all, but the atmosphere is kind of a drag when playing it again.

Not every game has to be roses and shit. :)

I still have yet to pick this up. I bought Lightning Returns and haven't played it yet. I bought a PS4 and Infamous and barely played that.

I'm bad at completing video games now. :(

I don't really care if it's roses and shit, just not as worth it going through everything again 10 years later for that payoff. The motivation to Blitzball, Lightning Dodge, chocobo race, and butterfly catch just isn't there.

A few months ago I played again. Got to the point where I would try all those things. The only thing that got me going was the Blitzball (Brother & Tidus kick major ass). The other things can get tedious. In X-2 the Gunner's Challenge thing on Besaid is kind of annoying. Really, you have to be in the mood to do some of those things.

Call me when it's FFVII

Downloaded a PSX emulator over the weekend and gave FFVII a whirl for the first time in ages. DID NOT AGE WELL. Final Fantasy III was a product of its time, too, but somehow the 2-D raster graphics have aged gracefully. The big clumps of polyhedrons have not.

Still such good music, though.

I had forgot how awful the graphics actually were. Wonder how they would've looked had they been on the N64 instead. Really doesn't take away from the game, though.

Final Fantasy VI (III US) is still fantastic.

It does take away from the game for me. The disparity between photorealistic backgrounds and weird gradiented blobs is just too jarring. It's like crossing Blade Runner with Mr. Bill. Still an all-time great video game, I just forgot how far we've come.

The improvement in graphics wouldn't have been worth the tradeoff in storage regarding textures/music/etc.

And this is coming from one of the last cartridge defenders.

Not to derail the thread, but what the hell, that's Nintendo's first major mistake.

It really wasn't a huge blunder, at least at the time...it's easy to forget now, but loading times back then when CDs were first being used were horrible. I remember playing a demo of a Need for Speed (can't remember which one) and it took two to three minutes to load from the menu to the race. Granted some developers knew how to work around this better than others but it was at the very least a noticeable (albeit minor) annoyance and at worst a really frustrating time waster.

PSX load times were brutal. By the PS2, it was much less noticable.

One of the reasons I got an N64 was because it was cartridge based. I was afraid if I got a PSX, the discs would scratch or break.

Bad thought.

It has aged perfectly fine.

What if we threw in a retranslation that wasn't as "someone set up us the bomb" as the original?

If only achievements/trophies existed back in the day...would have loved the moment that achievement for unlocking all the cheat codes in Goldeneye popped.

Also would have liked one for beating three friends in a 1vs3 deathmatch using a steering wheel as your controller.
