Dunno if it's the ISP's fucking with bandwidth as part of the "net neutrality' or "packet equality" brouhaha but shit has been slowing down in recent weeks, esp this last week. Have to reload gmail at times, or click "Load Low Bandwidth Version", google searches take longer, can't get to xhamster, etc, etc.

I think the problem with NetFlix isn't that folks want to watch movies and tv on their computers. We've been doing it for 15+ years now. I think the problem is that NetFlix doesn't just send you the entire movie or tv show file at once and be done with it; but instead opens up a connection between your device/computer and the content host (CDN or ISP or NetFlix or wherever) and keeps it open to stream the content. So instead of downloading a TV show in 2 minutes or a movie in 5 minutes and then giving up the connection, NetFlix streaming ties up a connection for the entire length of the TV show or movie-film--and NetFlix/Hulu/Amazon/et al do this at the behest of the content owners (tv/film studios) to prevent people "owning" a copy of the content (and re-watching later or sharing or archiving or whatever).

Packet equality and net neutrality are good things. The opposite is starting to occur which is bad.

Regardless, it wouldn't affect thingw like your gmail or basic web pages. So it seems to be something on your end or.your local hub is just having its bandwidth raped. Does it only happen during peak hours?

Yeah, debundling/a la carte service for TV channels/TV content via ISP's/cable companies will kill direct tv.

The slowness happens at all hours. Even late night. I check twitter when it happens and there are always a lot of folks complaining of slow internet at the same time.

I recently got "upgraded" to some faster class of Comcast internet--after calling to cancel HBO, of all things. You call to cancel something and they suck your dick and give you a ton of free shit these days. I have free HBO for another 18 months of something. Plus free internet phone. And faster internet, yadda, yadda. Weird But I think the slowness is unrelated to the upgrade. Bigger/more popular sites get hit by it. Google/Twitter/Facebook. All sites that, similar to Netflix, use CDN's and co-locating inside the ISP's to distribute their content. I'm thinking the ISP's are pinching their content as part of the net neutrality thing.
