I've been waiting for a GTA style sandbox game for Chicago, I'm glad it's this and not GTA. Multiple main characters == lots and lots of potential gameplay hours, and Ubisoft has the whole 3rd-person gaming engine down to a science at this point after AC. I'm interested in seeing just how much control they give you over the city in regards to what you can do with the phone...

Bump....less than two weeks away!

Taking the day off because it's my birthday, and my plan is to put my phone on mute while playing this all day.

Picked it up this morning...first mission/introduction was pretty impressive. Won't give any spoilers obviously but there is a reference to the baseball team in town winning something like a dozen championships over the past 100 years that completely destroyed the realism for me. :P

The in-game map looks...underwhelming. As does the 7 minute drive from one end of the map to the other.

I'll pick it up in the next week or two. It is Ubisoft so I can expect some sales pretty quickly.

Yeah I really haven't played much more but the first glance at the map had me thinking this wasn't a very big open world. First glance looked more like GTA3 and less like IV or V

I bought the game yesterday, and so far, I'll say it's decent.

I think Rockstar and GTA has set the bar so high, that others will just pale in comparison.

So far, a great deal of the game involves you having to hack computers lines, and that's fine and all, but I like the silliness of GTA missions like secretly filming a teen star being banged. This game doesn't have any laughable moments, besides for finding out a lot of peoples' crazy interests when you hack into their phone.

What I love about the game so far is the representation of the city. If you're into that thing, they did a great job. All of the major downtown landmarks are there, some of them are named the exact same for the real place (like the Willis Tower), others have different names (Ambrose Theater instead of Chicago Theatre).

Near future Assassin's Creed.

A GTA comparison is unfair. For a couple different seasons. They are both sandbox games with the ability to drive vehicles.

How close would you say the map is to a real representation of Chicago?

The closest representation is going to be about a downtown square mile on Michigan Ave to State, and Jackson to and just across the river past Wacker. It's almost perfect.

Everything else I've seen is pretty cookie cutter once you get out of downtown. The names of neighborhoods are generic. There isn't a Wicker Park or Lakeview...and it's way too hilly to be Chicago, unless they were trying to represent the small stretch of Beverly.

Think the third island of GTA 3.

The suburbs area is very similar. Lots of elevation changes and trees / forestry.

I'm gonna hopefully get a few hours with the game today and I plan on just driving around and seeing how much looks familiar to a tourist such as myself. :D

Does `Watch Dogs' know what it's talking about?
Real world: Chicago
May 22, 2014|By Ryan Smith | For RedEye
Set in a hyper-connected modern-day Chicago, "Watch Dogs" is full of virtual versions of real places. Between shootouts and car chases, gamers can even check in to and learn about more than 100 hot spots throughout the city, Foursquare-style.But did Canadian developer Ubisoft Montreal do Chicago justice? RedEye grabbed a controller to play watchdog on "Watch Dogs."

The Loop

Willis Tower, check. Streets named for dead presidents, check. Minor quibbles aside (The Bean looks more like a giant, yogurt-covered raisin), this is a near-picture-perfect downtown. Look closely and you can even see some RedEye-shaped newspaper boxes.

SCORE: 4 stars

River North/Magnificent Mile

It's been renamed "Mad Mile," but otherwise this historic shopping and tourist district is relatively spot-on. The John Hancock Center, Water Tower and Navy Pier (sans Ferris wheel) all resemble their counterparts.

SCORE: 3.5 stars

The North Side

The Gold Coast is represented, but most North Side neighborhoods have disappeared. An area called Parker Square on the West Side appears to be a weird hybrid of Lakeview, Humboldt Park and ... the suburbs?

SCORE 1.5 stars

The South Side

Divided into an industrial/shipping district (Brandon Docks) and a poorer area dominated by violent gangs (The Wards), this area only faintly resembles the true South Side. No Chinatown, no Hyde Park, no U.S. Cellular? No thanks. Also, the developers have relocated the now-razed Cabrini Green towers.

SCORE 1 star

The West Side

Aside from a vague Humboldt Park-like community in Parker Square, the west is not the best in "Watch Dogs."

SCORE: 0 stars

The lakefront

Miles of beach and path are missing, but Lake Michigan looks pretty accurate. Then again, the degree of difficulty is a little lower when its mostly just a whole lot of water.

Score: 2 stars

The suburbs

There are elements of Chicago's suburbs mixed into the game's Parker Square neighborhood, but don't expect to find, say, Naperville anywhere. Situated in a mountainous forest region north of the city is a faux town called Pawnee. Mountains in the Chicago `burbs? Yeah, right.

SCORE: 1 star

Sports facilities

U.S. Cellular Field and the United Center are MIA, and Soldier and Wrigley Fields have been smooshed together into a mutant North Side locale called "May Stadium."

SCORE: .5 stars

Transportation

The "L" stations, steel train cars and high-pitched screech of brakes look and sound right. On the other hand, there are only two lines available (Blue and Red), and the entire system is only on elevated tracks. A new train every 30 seconds and no Ventra card needed? Only in our wildest dreams. Also, where are buses and bicycles? Bonus: Water taxis!

SCORE: 2 out of 4

People

A mayor is mentioned, but Rahm Emanuel is nowhere to be found. Nor are there any other notable Chicagoans, even if the game makes historical references to Al Capone and other infamous criminals. Instead, "Watch Dogs" created thousands of ordinary citizens who represent rough composites of locals -- cops, graphic designers, non-profit workers, musicians. The voice acting sounds authentic without the stereotypical "Da Bears!" Chicago accent.

SCORE: 3 out of 4

Overall

The city of "Watch Dogs" feels like Chicago According to Tourists. Out-of-towner-friendly places like the Loop and Mag Mile area are well represented, but the farther you go from downtown, the less true-to-life it becomes. If you're not expecting a Google Maps level of detail, it's still satisfying to see some of the city's greatest sites in a video game.

SCORE: 2.5 out of 4

From what I've read the game is fun but it's basically Grand Theft Creed: Chicago with much crappier graphics and a lame hero.

The more I play the more I love this game...my favorite part (which is the part I figured I'd have no use for) is the multiplayer stuff...it just makes perfect sense in this universe that at any moment another player can drop into your world and try to fuck with you (whether it be hack you, tail you, etc.)...thoroughly enjoyed hiding from a guy in the parking lot of an apartment complex for three minutes and watch as he passed about five feet from me two or three teams and clearly got frustrated as his time expired...right before I reached 100 percent I heard him start gunning down random pedestrians.

Human Clay Creed, or My Own Prison, Creed?

I once traded a copy of Human Clay for a DQ Ice Cream Sundae

One of the multiplayer game types has one person on the PC/console racing around the city collecting checkpoints while another person on a phone/tablet calls in squad cars and sets off various traps throughout the city to try to stop them...I had a couple disconnects playing on the phone but it was pretty fun when it worked right.

Just finished the game...overall I really enjoyed this, but the last mission...well, by the end of it I thought I was going to break out in a fit of epilepsy. Once you play it you'll understand...

A few weeks later and I'm still enjoying the hell out of this...I'm still digging the multiplayer stuff and spend the majority of my time either hacking into other people's games or being hacked.

Well, it can be shut off and/or the Kinect can be unplugged...and now you can buy them without the Kinect at all...I love the voice control stuff

oh i know, i'm just saying he's got all that set up. i'd probably go for something way simpler...but i'd probably not mind having the kinect. just for the "star wars" dance game alone.
