Got a laptop that seems to be working fine except it will not connect to the internet.

It shows that it is connected to our wifi, but nothing will pull up.

Tried to do a system restore on it. Did not work.

Ran some spy ware on it. Found a couple things, removed those.

Still having the same problem.

Any suggestion?

Can you ping or connect to your router?

Anti-virus/firewall? Try shutting those off and see if anything changes.

no idea

I know the router is working as other devices are using it.

I had to shut off the antivirus software when I did the system restore as it would not finish without me doing that. Did not make a difference

Make sure your network settings on the laptop are set on auto obtain IP and DNS.

That is the first thing to try.

Restart the router.

Also confirm you are just using one router (as opposed to an extender or something) and make sure you are actually connected to yours, and not your neighbor's or the McDonald's across the street.

1 - try to do a direct connection to the router via network cable (instead of WiFi). If it connects then your WiFi setting (IE password or something else) is not setup correctly.

2 - Open Command Prompt (search for CMD) and type the following:
A - ipconfig /all (click Enter)
B - iponfig /release (click enter)
C - ipconfig /renew (click enter)
D - see if you can connect to internet

could be a bunch of things

did you just get this laptop? was it working fine before and suddenly it doesnt?

how old is the laptop? is the wifi card even able to connect to the security standards the router is using? have you tried disabling security alltogether on the router and see if the wifi connects to an open access point?

does it connect to other routers ok?

have you updated the wifi drivers per the latest from the manufacturers website?

Agreed. Remove all your drivers and keep them off.

the best way would be to do a sysprep on the machine and then youll know for sure all driver related issues are vanquished. but until we know the background of the machine more its hard to suggest anything. we dont even know if this thing was ever working, it could even be a bad wifi card.

Have had the laptop for quite awhile. It was working fine, never had any problems with it.

Haven't used it on other routers for awhile.

honestly my initial guess would be the wifi chip just died on you then

but uninstall the drivers and install the latest ones from the wifi manufacturers website. then youll know pretty much for sure. if it doesnt work, just get a new wifi card and pop it in. even good ones run about $25

if it's an HP it's a common problem with pavilions. downloading a different driver has fixed it for us.
