man has it been a good year for software... notably OS's

windows 10, despite the normal backlash, is by far the best windows ever. fast, stable, feature rich. just works with very little bugs

android marshmellow, so polished and great implementation of casting and storage integration. android 5 was pretty damn good, but 6 is outstanding.

android x86- finally has decent video driver support! and the new RemixOS... just, wow. You can finally run android on a PC with zero limitations. It runs like it does on your phone- if you were to boost your phones processing power by 100. All the games work!

Raspberry pi- it has its own new linux os out, so freakin nice. and it also has official google support for android!

2016 has been a transition for software. the hardware you run no longer matters... everything can run everything... it's getting really fun. My laptop can triple boot now- windows 10, linux mint 18, and android 6.0. It's so damn cool.
