Waiting for it to come down in price or have more time to play it?

edit: Also, I'm not sure if I'm too big of a pussy to try the Hardcore mode...

Mostly time...although the fact that it's a different team making it doesn't help either...if this was a new Bethesda RPG, I'd have a serious quandry on my hands...

Obsidian and Bethesda have an excellent working relationship - this isn't an Infinity Ward / Treyarch situation. Obsidian, through Black Isle Studios, is the original developer of the Fallout series...Bethesda only came in on Fallout 3. Bethesda has been in on the entire development process and is publishing the game. It might as well be developed by Bethesda. Obsidian isn't a fly by night developer, either. :)

Them being the original developer doesn't matter the least to me...I never played those games...

As for their relationship with Bethesda, again, really doesn't matter to me. You say it "might as well be developed by Bethesda" but I'll believe that if I see similar reviews to Fallout 3. Fact remains, the last game Obsidian developed (Alpha Protocol) was panned...I'll need to see favorable reviews galore before I'm even willing to consider taking any time away from Reach.

We shall await the reviews then. You will be pleasantly surprised. Everyone who has gotten their hands on it has found it to be just as rewarding as Fallout 3.

Like who?

I'm trying to find reviews and it seems all the major outlets aren't talking until tomorrow.

I'm talking previews. Official reviews are due tomorrow, yes.

Previews are, for the most part, useless...the developer can cherry pick a short portion of gameplay that they want the writer to see, which can lead to situations where the game you think are getting and the one you actually get a very different.

Pass. I'll save my RPG-ness for Fable III and Mass Effect 3.

I guess my biggest issues with Oblivion and Fallout 3 were the fighting engines. I'm more of a button-mash melee fighter. Mass Effect 2 was done very well in terms of combat, and that took me a little bit to get the hang of.

Even switching to a different camera angle did not seem to help with Fallout or Oblivion. I always felt like I was just whipping a weapon around the screen, not really sure if I was hitting the enemy.

Haven't seen a review from Gametrailers yet...they seem to do the best of lining up with my thoughts on a game...

...that being said, 84 thus far on Metacritic...meh. Just screams nothing special to me. I think I'll pass, barring a glowing review from Gametrailers.

Also, when browsing for reviews, I saw they gave Final Fantasy XIV a 4.2... ...ouch

Yeah...I think they gave presentation a 6.5 or something...and that was the high mark...

I at least hope the music is good...didn't Uematsu come back for this one?

PC version of Fallout has an 88 so far. People seem to think XBox version has technical issues...patch should fix that soon?

This is the third time I've tried making this post now...fucking shit...

Anyways, the fact that they seemed to have made a game just as buggy as Fallout 3 was at release is a huge red flag...it will be a while for them to patch it on the consoles too, as they don't have the same freedom to fix it as they do on the PC version...

Gametrailers review:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfIrI7RlQ4M

The way this review started off, I thought I was going to actually give it a go, but then when the "presentation" portion of the review was dominated by glitches, my decision to pass on this, for now anyways, was confirmed.

Which is s shame...because it sounds like it is otherwise a great game.

Best game since Half-Life 2. I don't play many games.

I played 5 hours on my first run but then started over just last night. Trying to take a more rational approach than just forging ahead. I ended up with so much useless junk in my inventory (thanks to fucking up my SPECIAL / perks) the first time through that I figure taking a little more time and leveling up before hitting the road might be worthwhile. We'll see.

Added challenge: my girlfriend's been sitting with me while I play and she's not into the violence, so I'm going for a morally good / pacifist approach for now (and cannot wait for the inevitable mid-winter "cannibal" run).

Playing on hardcore mode, too. It really should have been the only option.

Do you like the VAT system or do you think it slows down the game too much?

I guess I'm impatient and found VATS slowed the game down too much for my liking. I guess that's why I liked Borderlands.

A bit off-topic, but I picked up Fable 2 cheap... and I find it unbearably slow-paced and boring. Not surprising from the studio that brought you Black & White (a game I thought was going to revolutionize gaming).

I actually really enjoyed Fable II. Fallout 3 was just OK for me, especially since it was basically a FPS without all the things I like about FPS.

I don't mind VATS - it's good for certain encounters and poor for others. Prefer the iron-sight for picking off highwaymen.

For those that played this, what were your reactions to the game, particularly ....

- did it feel really stilted and lacking a real smooth gameplay/storyline like one finds in, say, Red Dead or Mass Effect? Was Fallout 3 much better in that respect, or am I looking thru rose-colored glasses?

- did you have notably more "freeze-ups" with the game than you otherwise do?
